Introduction
Hello,

I would like to share a few tips to protect your account from hackers and scammers.

  • Enable Steam Guard Authenticator
  • Enable Family View
Steam Guard Authenticator
You will need a portable device for this option, either a smartphone or a tablet, so you can download the Steam app to your device.

Click the link for instructions on how to enable it.
Family View
Family View is intended to be used to block certain sections or games on Steam from being accessed by your younger family members, BUT, it can also be used as an additional layer of security to protect unwanted access in case your password has been compromised.

You can activate a PIN code for Family view following this link .

You can select from this page, what kind of access you want to provide when Family View is activated. In this case, if you deselect all Online Content & Features and you set Library content to Only games I choose, you will be limiting the view to your library and every other option will be grayed out.

By doing so, you would be hindering the ability of the hacker from going into your settings and changing your e-mail address to theirs, losing control of your account.

Once Family View is activated with the options listed above, your whole account will be inaccessible and unusable unless the PIN is typed in.

Activating such option will prevent:

  • Store access and any purchases made on your account
  • Inventory access and any possible loss of your items through unauthorized trades
  • Chat, friends and group access and any opportunity of contacting any of your friends
  • Settings access and any changes in your personal settings
Conclusion
I had lost my account back in 2014 to a hacker, and took me all sorts of efforts to gain back access and recovering what was lost. In the process I was blocked by many friends in my list and most of my unique items went stolen. Ever since then, I have activated both the Guard and Family View and avoided any link that required me to use my Steam credentials to login.

These steps may not be much, but they ultimately add additional layers of security to protect your account from unwanted access.

A good rule of thumb would also be to avoid any links that require you to login with your credentials in order to see the content.

Avoid as well accepting friend requests from suspicious profiles as they also may pose a direct threat to you or users on your friends list.

Refer to this guide for determination criteria that would help you spot potential suspicious accounts:

Thank you again for reading, I hope this guide helped you.

Be safe!
