Keyboard Users - A Decent Control Scheme [Old]
By Lyyti
After setting up my keyboard and mouse controls to emulate the setup I had back in Dark Souls 1, I realised it may be helpful for me to share it.

There are also some alternative layouts to help eliminate mouse lag.

Other Layouts: Mitigating Input Lag
There is apparently some severe mouse input lag when it comes to controlling attacks. The input lag makes it very very difficult to pull off jump attacks and guard breaks, if not impossible.
The delay is most likely intentional, in order for the game to check if you're double-clicking or not.

This can be alleviated by using the work-around here.
This can also be fixed by binding the attacks to extra mouse buttons and/or keyboard keys.

I also recommend using this version of an AHK script, which will allow you to use ESC to toggle the script on and off:

LButton::Numpad4
RButton::Numpad5
Esc::Suspend

(Copy the above three lines into the AutoHotkey.ahk file located in Documents.)

This mouse lag will hopefully eventually be patched either by From Software themselves or by people from the wonderful modding community per the previous game, such as Durante or M0tah.

Two alternative layouts to take advantage of extra mouse buttons or keyboard controls:

If you have any problems with the 'double click for a strong attack' scheme (or use the AHK script above, which makes double-clicking impossible), you can put a different handedness on two extra mouse buttons. This is the method I use now, and is the method I used in the first Dark Souls.

If you lack extra mouse buttons, a combination of R and F can be suitable for left-hand attacks. You will then need to bind the controls that used to rest on R and F to keys more off to the side.
The Main Layout
(Mouse input lag is a rather serious issue. Scroll to the second section to look at workarounds to completely fix it!)

Here[imgur.com] is an album of screenshots for the key bindings menu in-game.

A textual rundown of all the settings as they'd appear in the key configuration menu:

'Shoulder Buttons':
  • Right click = Attack (right hand)
  • Double right-click = Strong Attack (right hand)
  • Left click = Attack (left hand)
  • Double left-click = Strong Attack (left hand)
(It should be noted that there is some serious input lag for mouse clicks, check the second section for alternatives/workarounds.)

'Face Buttons':
  • E = Interact (Represented as the A symbol in-game)
  • Q = Use Item (Represented as the X symbol in-game)
  • R = Wield right weapon two-handed (Represented as the Y symbol in-game)
  • Left Shift = Dash/Backstep/Roll (Represented as the B symbol in-game)

'D-Pad':
  • X = Switch left weapon
  • C = Switch right weapon
  • Mouse wheel up = Switch spells
  • Mouse wheel down = Switch items

Misc:
  • WASD = Movement, as always
  • G = Open Gesture Menu
  • Left Alt = Walk
  • Space = Reset camera/Target Lock/Release

Menu Controls:
  • F = Function 1 (Stands in for the 'X' button in menus)
  • V = Function 2 (Stands in for the 'Y' button in menus)
  • Enter = Confirm (Stands in for the 'A' button in menus)
  • Backspace = Cancel (Stands in for the 'B' button in menus)

Keep in mind that this layout is made in mind for the 'jump' setting set to 'B' and not 'L3'. If you want a seperate control for jump, Caps Lock or F may be appropriate.

More esoteric attacks:
These attacks are subject to trouble with mouse lag. Read workarounds for this problem in the next section.
  • Press W + Light attack with your primary weapon to perform a guard break.
  • Press W + Strong attack with your primary weapon to perform a jump attack.
  • Tap Shift, then immediately Light attack with your primary weapon to perform a sort of 'feint attack'.
Things particular to the R key:
  • Tap R to use your right-hand weapon in two hands, Hold R to do the same with your left-hand weapon.
  • Hold R when dual wielding weapons that you have 150% skill requirements for to enter a 'power stance'. This acts as a different moveset from normal dual-wielding.
  • Press R when the prompt 'Y - Toggle' appears to toggle through actions. This is important for lighting torches or for reading messages.
Things to Keep in Mind
If you're having trouble confirming the keybindings, try clicking the 'A - Confirm' prompt at the bottom of the menu.

You will want to set quite a few options in the 'Mouse' menu to null.

Doing so will help to mitigate control issues while you try to play.

There is an issue of cumbersome key bindings for the 6th, 'menus' section.

Many of the key bindings under that category are represented by the same XBoX face symbols which are used in the game itself. This can be very confusing. Note how in the layout graphic at the top where I have F marked as 'X!?'.

There are two settings in particular underneath the 6th category in keybindings, called 'Function 1' and 'Function 2'. Function 1 is represented by the 'X' face button inside the menus, despite the fact that 'Use Item' supposedly is tied to 'X'.

Basically, set Function 1 to F to be easily accessible on the keyboard, and the other in-menu 'buttons' can just be clicked with the mouse. (It's also good to keep in mind that you can right click items to access a menu for certain actions.)

Incidently, 'Function 2' is the 'Y' control in the menus, which is most relevant when choosing gestures.

@Imperialism, It's very possible, you'll just need to make sure that the two buttons for the left hand will be easily accessible. Relevant information for this is at the bottom of the second section.

So theres no way of just setting attack keys to mouse right and left click? Like in DS1?

If you're having trouble with mouse bindings and delay, check out this tool. Comes with a gui, no AHK requirement. Works well.

Yeah just saw that. This is so weird I don't know why it didn't ship with proper key bindings...Anyway, got it the way I want it finally. That mouse input lag is odd...its not too bad though, they probably will fix it so I'm not concerned
