Inventory Basics
  • There are three sections of inventory - Ammo, fired by your gun, Objects which are mostly consumable items, and Raw Materials, which can be used to craft the other two in the inventory view. Each section of inventory has it's own maximum capacity.
  • Hold Q to change your current Ammo and Object. The game will pause while you do this, so you can take your time to select ammo and gear during combat. Note that you cannot select which Ammo/Object is currently active in the inventory/crafting view, only using Q.
  • The inventory/crafting view does not pause during combat, so it's a good idea to make sure you have crafted enough ammo/etc before you get into a fight.
  • You only have one gun but can get multiple types of Ammo; this includes the Hacking tool and "Healing" ammo to shoot at friendly mecha.
  • Infinite use items like your scanner drone and the hacking tool will not appear in inventory screen, but will appear when you press Q to switch.
  • Upgrade chips and fragments will not appear in inventory either, you can only see them where they can be used for upgrades and there doesn't seem to be a limit on how many you can carry.
  • All craftable items are consumable (although some have a limited number of places to use them in the game).
  • All raw materials are either drops from plants or from destroyed wild mecha.
  • Dropped items will remain in a "bag" on the ground for a while before disappearing.
Player Character Upgrades
  • Player upgrades/levels is done through the "evolve" function in the base in the room before the greenhouse. You can't level up in the field.
  • While fragments used to upgrade the mecha and the Research % upgrades are infinitely farmable, the chips used for player character upgrades are limited, so make your choices carefully.
  • At least one or two levels in inventory capacity are practically essential early on to be able to carry enough materials between bases and enough ammo (of different types) to survive the tougher battles withough having to craft more in the middle of combat.
  • The endurance upgrade seems to be by far the least useful. You can cheaply craft an endurance serum that lets you sprint more in an emergency anyway, and upgrading inventory capacity does more to reduce the amount of running around than upgrading sprinting time.
  • All the combat upgrades are viable but some are more useful or not depending on your pet mecha and combat style. The blaster damage upgrade seems the most effective in general; it also effectively increases your ammo capacity by doing more damage per shot. Upgrading max HP will be more useful later in the game when healing items are more powerful and ranged attacks more common.
  • The research % levels only affects what items are craftable. It will increase quickly early on but slow down later, but still quite easy to max out if you're grabbing every plant you can.
Mecha Hints
  • You can have more than one mecha pet. This requires a station repair which requires some rare map items which requires a mid game craftable to obtain which requires a "boss" loot drop to build.
  • Fragments used to upgrade a mecha pet are effectively lost when it dies. As it's often easier to get a replacement mecha than to upgrade an existing one, you may find it better to hang on to fragments until you can make lots of upgrades which will increase the survivability of that mecha and make it less likely to lose it.
  • Mecha can teleport to you if they are having trouble getting to you by foot; you don't have to worry about leaving them behind in difficult terrain.
  • Some wild mecha are always hostile; some will be initially passive but can become hostile if you do certain things nearby which upset them.
  • The lights on mecha indicate their mood and what weapons they will use; the same types of mecha can have different types of attack.
  • Only the "common" types of wild mecha are hackable.
Miscellaneous
  • Carrying an Endurance Serum can save you if you get caught far away from a save point with a storm approaching. They're the cheapest item to craft so they can also be used effectively before any combat you might want to run away from, or just to speed up a long trip on foot.
  • Don't worry about "unplugging" parts from windmills; their purpose is to be salvaged for materials.
  • Ionizers can be used infinitely once a battery is attached.
  • You will be given the codes to open the locked storage crates as the game progresses. It is not necessary to try to guess the codes.
  • Uprooting a plant in the greenhouse doesn't give you anything, just frees up the space to plant another type of seed if you want to farm more of a different raw material.
  • Attaching the "grapple" to the oil-drop boxes won't do anything straight away, but will allow you to come back to collect them later in the game.
  • You can go back to the starting island at any time to farm fragments and basic raw materials if low on them.
