Dunno if it was made clear, if possible mailing friend is accompanying you, you wont get letters from them. Another reason to use Gamakatsu's characters.

Ok found him.
When looking at the Hidden Leaf Village Map, left side of the center that looks like an "S", in that map NorthWest. Strange... he wasnt there in the first place... maybe he appears after doing somethings in the village.
On a side note, anyone thats accompaning you, you will not see them around to do their quest thus you wont be able to message them. If you want, and I recommend, use Gamakatsu(small toad found south of The Hokage's Mansion) characters to accompany you.
