So, begin at the start (obviously), and round the beacons in order. You don't have to go close enough that you could hit it, just pretty near. Yes, the start is meant to be angled like that. Use the building area to design your own ships, I provided some ugly five-minute jobs chock full of thrusters if you want to try it out straight away. The course is not anything special, although you do have to watch your turning and speed when coming up to beacons.
I reccommend playing this on creative, I have not provided fuel and such for survival.
