Lost your save file? I feel your pain, it happened to me too. That's why on my way through the game a second time I started making bookmarks in every chapter to post here and save other people the hassle of having to restart like I did.

It may be necessary to disable cloud saves for this to work (untested). I recommend doing that anyways since the cloud save system for this game seems pretty broken as it is.

Here's the link to the save files:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1rVT0uXTb682Q6X-EsZHyUKn2gPLYUReK?usp=sharing

Step 1: Download a file from the drive.

Save it somewhere you'll find it, like to your desktop, or just save it directly into your save folder, which you can find using the next step.

Step 2: Find your save folder.
In Windows, this is usually in C:\Users\*[USERNAME]*\Documents\My Games\Chrono Trigger
Replace *[USERNAME]* with your username, or just go to your 'My Documents' folder and find it from there. The path should look something like it does in the red square below.

For Steam Deck: Hold your power button for a couple seconds to get into desktop mode, then open Dolphin (file explorer). From there, make sure you enable "Show hidden files" from the 3 line menu in the top right. Then look in .local > share > Steam > SteamApps > compatdata > 613830 > pfx > drive_C > steamuser > Documents > My Games > Chrono Trigger

For Linux: the save folder can be found in: home / *[USERNAME]* / .local / share / Steam / steamapps / compatdata / 613830 / pfx / drive_c / users / steamuser / Documents / My Games / Chrono Trigger /

From there you should be able to replace the save files as you would in Windows.

Step 3a: Get rid of the old save file
Delete, rename, or remove a save file (circled in the image above) you wish to replace. If the file doesn't exist yet, you can skip this. The archive save file needs to be renamed exactly to one of these names for it to work. If a file with the same name already exists, you won't be able to rename the new save file properly (if it's in the same folder), or you'll have to replace the existing file when you copy it in because you can't have two files with the same name and type in the same folder. A good way to do this is to just add something to the name, like below.

Deleting save files
Be careful doing this one! Best practice is to move or rename the files in case you make a mistake. At the very least, don't empty your recycle bin / trash unless you are absolutely sure you don't want the files ever again. If using steam cloud, there will be no way to recover them if you delete save files then sync. You have been warned.

Let's say, for whatever reason, you wish to empty your save slots. Here's how:
If you have steam cloud disabled you can just move or delete the save files from the folder and next time you go to save they will be empty slots again.

If you have steam cloud enabled and you want to wipe the saves from that, they need to be moved elsewhere or deleted while the game is running, then close the game right after. This way it will sync the deletion to the cloud and they will stay empty the next time you open the game.

Step 3b: Move the archive save into this folder
The save needs to be in this folder to work, so move it here if you downloaded it somewhere else.

Step 3c: Rename the downloaded save file.
For the save to be recognized, you need to rename it based on the slot you wish for it to appear in.
For Slot 1, rename it save_00.bin
For Slot 2, rename it save_01.bin
For Slot 3, rename it save_02.bin
For Quicksave Slot, rename it save_03.bin
For Slot 4, rename it save_20.bin (????)
For Slot 5, rename it save_04.bin
For Slot 6, rename it save_05.bin
Etc, etc.
Basic rule is Slot # - 1 for the .bin save file #. Except slot 4. Slot 4=20 (maybe they were smoking something when they coded that? Who knows)

Anyways, if you did this step right, the archive save file should look exactly like one of the files circled in Step 2 and it will now be recognized by the game.

Step 4: When you load up one of these saves, check the settings in game
I had changed some inputs for it to work properly on my controller, as well as changing some of the battle speed settings because I found the ATB much faster on PC than SNES (at least faster than I remember). You'll likely want to change them back to what you're used to.

There you go, that's all there is to it! Hopefully you didn't lose too much progress, but this should save you some headaches at the very least.

P.S. I have also uploaded saves at turning points in NG+ for achievements. For these all you need to do is load it up and beat the game.

P.P.S. If you want to jump right in to New Game+, replace meta.bin and common.bin in your save folder with the ones from the archive.

Shout out to Wiz for providing the final save for Dream's Epilogue! The archive is now complete thanks to their help. Thank you Wiz!

Also, I noticed while testing that they added up to 20 save slots at some point, but for some reason save slot #4 in game is save_20.bin in the save folder. Then slot 5 is save_04.bin... I dunno wtf they were smoking when they coded that one. Guess I should update that too because that had me scratching my head for a couple minutes.

Yea, I did some quick tests and figured it out. If you have steam cloud disabled you can just move or delete the save files from the folder and next time you go to save they will be empty slots again.

If you have steam cloud enabled and you want to wipe the saves from that, they need to be moved elsewhere or deleted while the game is running, then close the game right after. That way it will sync the delete to the cloud and they will stay empty. Be careful doing this one if you rely on the cloud for backups! There's no way to recover them if both your save folder and the cloud get wiped. It's a good idea to make a copy of your save folder somewhere else before messing with this in case you make a mistake.

Hope that helps.

Do you know how I delete certain save slots on my game?

Hey, good on ya! Hope you had fun collecting everything.

I updated the guide to let everyone know to replace meta.bin and common.bin to get into NG+ as well as with instructions to find the save folder on Steam Deck and Linux. I had been putting it off for too long. Thanks again for reminding me.

Well by now I've almost finished my run off that file with all the items, maxed level and almost maxed stats. Once I'm done, I'll finished the 3rd Black Omen then do a speed run new game + just to unlock all the endings, maybe I'll put that save file up as a true 100% file.

You can hop into NG+ right away by replacing meta.bin and common.bin with those files from the archive. Maybe I should update the guide to reflect that. Thanks for reminding me.

There might be some stuff I missed here or there, and maybe some early game gear that I sold off, yeah. I'm admittedly not a perfectionist and I didn't think this would get much attention when I started it. But hey, if that's something you would like to see, then I'd encourage you to put that perfect collector run together. Getting absolutely everything could be a fun goal to shoot for. If you don't want to create a guide/host it yourself then I'd be willing to add it in here and shout you out. Cheers

There really should be a file that has everything. Access to New Game+, all of the items/weapons/equipment, all the techs learned, ect. I checked the last file and it was missing a lot of the earlier gear, some of the triple techs, the Golden Gemstone.

No trouble at all. Sorry to hear AI spoiled things for you. Hope you enjoy the rest of the game regardless. It's one of the greats

Ah I see 🙏 thank you so much for the quick response and sorry for having you go out of your way, I was worried if it was gonna be detrimental considering yours are legit the only incremental saves I've found online for the pc version, I asked chatgpt about it and it both didn't help and major spoiled the game lol no biggie tho, thanks again for the explanation and especially for backing up and posting these saves, they were a godsend to me just as they are for everyone else here

I think that might just be a doppel doll that you can win at the milennial fair. It doesn't affect anything gameplay or story-wise, it's just a little extra thing you can win from a mini-game at the fair. Hope that clears things up!
