In the early days alchemy was outlawed in most regions, and whatever alchemy was practiced was done so under utmost secrecy. By necessity, their production chambers needed to be small enough to be hidden from plain sight. These production chambers are uncomfortably small by today's standards. Combined with the primitive machinery that these alchemists were forced to use, and it's a miracle that they were able to transmute anything at all.

This contraption in particular was custom made for an alchemist referred to as "il pagliaccio", after his talented atom juggling. Try it for yourself and you'll soon find out why.
