Loadout Guide - Saxon Churl and Viking Bondi
By Olyrian
In this guide I will tell you how to create the perfect spear wielding loadout that is based on the skirmisher class. I have also applied some historic background.

The final product we have is actually the result of a few experiments I did to make the best melee skirmisher possible. Care and effort went into this.

A quick “warning” here, I don’t recommend you play this loadout unless you are experienced with the game and with spears. It is definitely not for beginners.

Historic Background
Churl or Ceorl is Old English for a "Common Person" or a "Free Peasant". Bóndi is Old Norse (and Icelandic) for "Farmer"

In Viking Age Scandinavia all men were required to own weapons. The most common and cheapest weapon available was the spear so it was therefore the weapon of choice for the poorer Norsemen such as farmers. The secondary choice would likely have been a seax (or sword since it is the closest we can get in game).

Armour was also very expensive so it was generally limited to the wealthy and the professional warriors.
Weapons and How to Use Them
Spear
A very powerful weapon if used correctly but notoriously hard to master.

Pros
  • Long Reach - Keep enemies as far away as possible and use this advantage well. Also take note that the closer the target is to the end of the spear the more damage it will do. (There is currently a bug in this game where overhead attacks are not affected by this.)
  • Good at hitting around shields - If the enemy is using a shield make sure to aim for their head or legs depending on where they are holding their shield.
  • Special Push Attack - Instead of a powerful attack like other weapons F will do a push instead, use it to keep enemies at a distance and if possible push them off cliffs or into rivers. Note that while the push does have a large area of effect it can only push one enemy at a time.
Cons
  • Highest Minimum Charge - Against faster charging weapons you wont stand a chance so try and keep your distance and remember to parry or dodge away from attacks.
  • Two-handed - Since it is a two-handed weapon you can't use a shield with it leaving you vulnerable to archers and throwing weapons. Take cover when you can and if someone is about to shoot you dodge out the way.
  • Can only hit one enemy at a time - If you are outnumbered switch to your sword, explained more below.
Sword
The sword is the best crowd control weapon available, use it if you are outnumbered.

Pros
  • Can hit through multiple enemies - Perhaps the best advantage of using the sword, try to hit as many enemies as possible.
  • The second quickest weapon - Daggers are the only weapon that quicker. Use speed to your advantage, hug the enemy and swing quickly.
Cons
  • Low(ish) Damage - Beware of axes and aim for the neck if you can.

Other Notes
  • Never use a one-handed axe with a spear - The sword and spear and total opposites, and that is a very good thing. It allows you to adapt to almost any situation.
  • Footwork is very important - After you have released an attack walk backwards as you are charging a new attack and don't stop aiming for the enemy. If they are coming in range release the attack and dodge away and then dodge attack them. Using methods like these can give you quick and easy kills.
  • Consider picking up a shield - This loadout lacks in defense so picking up a shield isn't a bad idea, even if you just keep it on your back.
  • Highest Damage Possible with the Spear is around 80 to 90 - Can be achieved with a dodge attack to the face at the maximum range.

Perks and How to Use Them
Skirmisher (Locked)
Weapons switch speed allows you to adapt to the amount of enemies fighting quickly. Especially important for this loadout so you can switch between the long, slow spear and the short, quick sword.

Quick Blood (Locked)
No stamina cost for jumping can help you get out of some dangerous situations. It could also be used to jump to a higher place such as a rock during a fight and leave you with enough stamina to repeatedly hit the enemies below with your spear.

Aglie Fighter
A good perk with any loadout but with spears it is especially effective. You can deal as much damage as a charged attack, have the longest reach possible by a melee weapon and get away from the enemy at the same time. You also generally have more stamina as a skirmisher because of Quick Blood, more stamina will help you dodge more.

Hard Hitter
An excellent perk for spears, it allows you to hold a fully charged attack for longer so you can walk backwards and forwards charging and releasing attacks. It helps you build up some speed too because after each consecutive successful hit your attack charges quicker.
Maps and Gamemodes
CLIFF
Cliff is an amazing map to make use of the push ability, add that onto the bridges which create great choke points in Conquest and you are a force to be feared! There are also plenty of rocks that you can jump onto with help from the Quick Blood perk to escape from dangerous situations and give you the high-ground advantage.

ICEFLOE
Just like Cliff, Icefloe has areas where you can make use of the push ability and has plenty of jumps where the Quick Blood perk becomes useful.
