Hostess Maker

As you go through the story, Akiyama will be grooming Lily to be a #1 Hostess. After this is achieved, he'll get the call to train more women. This happens very late in his part, and it's entirely possible to miss it what with the actual story going on, but the point of this is to scout three women who might be potential marks for his club and train them up to be night goddesses or whatever. Kiryu did the same thing in the previous game, but at least it seems Akiyama would be more suited to this line of work.

Quick clarification for folks who have played other examples of cabaret club management. This is one of the earlier examples of this kind of minigame. There was an even more stripped-down version in Yakuza 2 (the PS2 one), but the focus here is not the club itself, but the individual hostess, and training her up to be #1.

Finding a Hostess
The first thing you have to do is find a prospect. That means hitting the streets. Here's a list of where to find each of the three potentials:

Hiyori is found right outside Millennium Tower. She'll be speaking to her dad and will run off.
Follow her to the west and you'll see her having turned the corner on the right.

Kyoko is found in Bantam with her bandmates.

Nanami is found in Cuez Bar with her soon-to-be ex-boyfriend.

Simply speak to the woman in question and after a little conversation, she'll agree to join up with the club. Each of them does have a name, but there's a tendency for hostesses to take stage names, so you'll be asked to change it if you want.

Quick and Dirty Strategy
Here we go again... The Dress, Makeup and Hair to get you through this as quick as possible without going through the mechanics too much. Except, unlike in Yakuza 3 where you can use only 1 outfit for 3 preferences, this time you have to go through 3 different outfit variations for 3 different preferences.
Just keep note what the customers are asking for, you might have to shift between 3 different outfits in one shift to reach 1#.

Now what I haven't mentioned is that not all those will be available to you right away. Every three shifts (that aren't special events) you'll get a new pile of stuff added to the wardrobe to use, so you'll be able to collect those as you go. In the meantime, attempt to get as close as possible, because even just an approximate dress and the makeup will get you a considerable boost.

So, once you've locked in your dress-up, the next step is the Training regime. The short answer is that once you get all the options:

1.Lecture - 2.Free Time - 3.Relax
Of course, you won't have two of those to begin with. Before you get those, train two other topics and use Free Time.

In short, your first hostess will be your hardest. Once you've finished getting her to #1, you'll get the option of going for the other girls and it won't take nearly as long.

Fashionista Trophy
This minigame contains the one trophy you can miss and can't go back to without starting a New Game. The Fashionista Trophy requires you to buy one of every type of outfit for this minigame. Once you get all three hostesses maxed, you won't be able to do this. You don't have to buy multiple colors, nor are accessories counted in this. Just get one of each of the twenty-three different outfit types. Yes, twenty-three.

Do remember that you can only buy an outfit with the intent of wearing it, so you'll be going through at least one time segment wearing it. As for making sure you have all outfits available, it might take some shifts of you just doing nothing, because the wardrobe only increases every three shifts. Make an outfit that gives almost nothing (like say her street clothes) or just not train, because you can totally blow past the opportunity if you're too good. The last items you get are the Long Two-Piece Dress, the Cami Dress, and the Cache-couer.

That's it. Everything below is a bit more detail about the process.
Hostess Maker in-Depth

Just in case you need a bit more explanation or dont want the quick and easy option, heres a bit more detailed explanation on Hostess Maker.

The Four Styles
One of the factors that customers look for in the club is what style their hostess is, and there are four styles to address:

Cute - Basically looking youthful and peppy

Refined - Looking proper and conservative

Gorgeous - Accentuating elegance and poise

Flashy - Going all out on the eye-catching glam and glitz

What your hostess wears determines how much of each style she's pulling off, and that's show on a
"pink diamond" meter on her stats.

Now there are numbers to this, which I don't intend to address in this guide. In short, putting on a certain dress gives you a baseline amount for each look, and each other element (hair, makeup, accessories) modifies those numbers based on the dress. For example, if you wore the Sexy Dress and the Curly Updo, the hair would have a different effect than if you wore the Gorgeous Dress and the Curly Updo. It's a complicated system that if you're truly interested in, I suggest looking up Japanese wiki guides for. Bottom line is that the style given above is more than sufficient for all four styles.

8 a good place as any to point out that all wardrobe stuff costs money. You operate on a separate cabaret club fund then your normal walking around cash, so no fair buying everything with what you have in your pocket. Buying dresses and accessories costs money once, after that you can rotate and use them however you wish. Applying makeup is free. Changing hair and nails costs money every time you do it, so be wary.

Training
While looking good is a job all its own, a hostess' real skill is in keeping her customers entertained. To that end, she needs to train up three skills, and manage two meters:

Skill 1: Looks - This is basically how the hostess carries herself, such as posture, body language, emotional responses

Skill 2: Smarts - Oftentimes, the hostess herself has to carry the conversation and bring up topics. More knowledge about the world means more stuff to talk about.

Skill 3: Charisma - The simple ability of the hostess to attract and entertain.

Meter 1: Motivation - Hostesses are human too. A higher motivation means better service.

Meter 2: Stress - Everyone has bad days, and being stressed can lead to poorer service. If a hostess' Stress is maxed out by the end of a shift, she may take the next day off. If this happens, simply come back to the club again and she'll be back.

So the idea of Training is to get the skills increased the maximum S rank, keep Motivation high, and Stress low. When you select Training you'll initially have four options:

Looks 101 - Have a chance to boost Looks while raising Stress a bit.

Trivia Drills - Have a chance to boost Smarts while raising Stress a bit.

Talking Tips - Have a chance to boost Charisma while raising Stress a bit.

Free Time - Have a chance to reduce Stress.

After several shifts, you'll get three new options to the list:

Lecture - This gives you a high chance of boosts to all three Skills, while raising Stress a lot.

Relax - This drops Stress like a rock, but also reduces Motivation a bit.

Encourage - This raises Motivation a lot, but also increases Stress.

When you start out, do two Tips and Free Time. Do NOT repeat any Training on a single shift, as it will always fail. Once you unlock the new options, the progression should be Lecture, Free Time, Relax. Keep to that and you shouldn't have to deviate.

Working a Shift
Once you wish to begin a shift, enter the club and you'll be asked to check the floor to see what people want, then you'll be tossed to the dressing room. You can do Dress Up once, Training once, and Check Stats at any time. Once you've completed what you want backstage, select Go to Club.
When Akiyama is asked to walk the club floor, he's trying to figure out what customers are looking for. A bunch of word balloons will pop up to that effect, so when you go back to the dressing room, you'll know what to prepare for the next shift. Make sure you tailor the next outfit for what the customers will want. That said, you can only raise the skills up so much on any given shift anyway, so don't pay too much attention to that.

Also the game requires you to hear at least so many word balloons before you can go back to the dressing room and will let you know when you've heard enough. Essentially, you'll have to make a full circuit of the floor.

There are three sections to a shift, with time in the dressing room in between. Once you complete the third section, your helper will let you know how your hostess' rank changed and the funds you got out of her shift. After that, you get tossed back onto the street, ready to begin the process all over again.

Getting #1
While it might take a few shifts, getting to #1 is actually pretty easy. Simply raise your hostess' skills to S-Rank, have her maxed on all the styles (as noted above), and have a great shift where she doesn't get too stressed, which is easy to monitor if you use the Training regimen I've indicated above. When the helper lets you know she's reached #1, you'll have completed your work with her. The manager will ask you to put together an outfit for her that you'll want her to keep using. Pick whatever you like, but remember that will still have to pay for anything you don't already own.

After you finish, that hostess will be available to be visited by another character (Kiryu or Tanimura). With that hostess complete, walk around town for a couple of minutes and the manager will call again, asking for another hostess.

After completing the first hostess, you'll get a 10G Coin, which you can sell for 10,000 yen. The second hostess complete gets you a 100G Coin, good for 50,000, oddly enough. The last hostess gets you a 1000G, again odd in that you get 500,000 yen for it.

Events
In the process of training up your hostess, you may have to do small side events.
If Hiyori goes missing, you'll find her sitting outside Millennium Tower.

If Kyoko goes missing, she'll be in Bantam.

If Nanami goes missing, she'll be in Cuez Bar.
Hostess Dating - Introduction

The Basics
There are three cabaret clubs in the game that can be visited. There's Shine on Pink Street, Jewel on Shichifuku, and Elise on Taihei. Enter and an attendant will receive you. Just as a note, you'll be spending some money on this. Some cabaret clubs require a minimum of 14,700 yen and you'll be visiting each hostess multiple times, and you'll have the opportunity to dump more money into your visits if you so choose. Just prepare your wallet, is all I'm saying.

As a note, only Akiyama, Tanimura, and Kiryu can visit cabaret clubs. Saejima will refuse. Also, Akiyama can't be a patron at Elise, since he owns the club. It would be a bit of a conflict of interest.
On your first visit, the attendant will sit you down and a series of women will service you over the course of the visit. At the end of this visit, you'll get the business card of one or more hostesses. From that point on, you can return and specifically request that hostess.

Once you're paired up with her, the conversation will begin. First, she'll often make a comment on your appearance. For this, you can gain or lose hearts based on what you might be wearing as an Accessory or Gear. Most items that give you hearts at the beginning of a visit are expensive or late-game special items, but there are a few that are relatively inexpensive and can be picked up early, like the Charisma Ring found in the lockers. Still, there's likely always some kind of effort that goes into securing these items, and while they can speed things up, ignoring them and using the conversation guide can work just fine.

Food and Drink
Once the two of you sit down, the first thing the hostess asks is if you want a drink and food. Depending on the hostess, she might have positive or negative reactions to what you order. For each hostess, I first list what they will have positive reactions to, and the cheapest one possible. Every hostess will have big positive reactions to the most expensive champagne, but it's never economical to dump that much money.

Conversation
Once the order's in, the conversation begins. The hostess has a series of topics she'll bring up, usually between two to four per visit, and while she has a large number, she will cycle through them once the end is reached. For each hostess, I've listed what the best responses are to the topics brought up, and everything goes in order, for the most part.
There are a couple of instances where the order is interrupted. If you've recently gone on a date with a hostess, there are specific "after date" conversations, which I've listed in a separate chart on each hostess.

Furthermore, the conversation order can be pre-empted with a "Heat Gaze" topic or a "Gossip" topic. She might also ask if she could order something. Generally a good idea to do so unless you're strapped for cash.
After a certain number of topics (less on the first visit, more on subsequent visits), your time will be up. In most cases, apart from the first visit, you'll have the option of getting an extension. Choose to extend and you'll add another pile of yen onto the bill for the cover and will get a few more topics. You can only extend once. After that, the visit ends and you pay your bill and get dumped back out on the streets.

Once you leave, she'll text you. If you select the right response out of the three, you'll get a little boost on your next visit, but it's pretty small all around.
Heat Gaze

Once you hit eight hearts and fourteen hearts, the next topic will require an answer that's found on a part of the hostess' body. The view will switch to first-person, and you'll have to focus on a part of her body that generates a proper response. That sounds super creepy now that I've just typed it out, but never mind that. For each of these, use the Right Stick to look at her and then hold down Mouse 1 to STARE INTENTLY.

Gossip
Every so often your hostess may turn the tables and ask you to bring something up. Usually they'll ask if you've heard about anything "interesting" lately. It's up to you to learn topics to bring up and these can be found in the wild. All the characters can learn the same topics, but each of them have to learn them individually. Here are the topics:
Once you do these, your character will say "I'll bet this will be useful at the cabaret club" or something similar. As you'd expect, I give you the best ones to give to each hostess. Note that repeating the same topic on a second or third attempt will give you diminishing returns. Who wants to hear about the same thing twice?

777 Town - Several places. For example, two guys in Volcanic Volcano talk about it.

Amoebatar - Several places. For example, there's a couple at the northwest corner of Theater Square discussing this.

Footbaths at the Hot Spring - Go to Yunosono Hot Springs and go to the couple standing next to the entrance.

Pole Dancing - Take in a show at Asia. When you leave, the bouncer will talk to you.

Ghost in the Underground Mall - Once you open twenty-five lockers in the Underground, go west to find a couple talking.

Golf Dates - Speak to a guy inside the MEB (not the attendant). For some reason, you'll need to engage in a fight near the MEB where you smash them through the glass in a cutscene for this guy to appear.

Sweet Sake - Eat at Sushi Gin three times and the hostess will talk to you.

Eating Liver - Eat at Kanrai three times and the host will talk to you.

Dates
As you get close to ten hearts and fifteen hearts, leave the club and walk around a bit and your hostess will call and ask if you want to go out. They'll say they'll be waiting at a particular location for you to pick them up. Try to get there in a decent time, as you'll lose a little bit of Heart Meter if you're super late (like over ten minutes) and gain a little if you're early (under five minutes).
Once you arrive, you may have a little story encounter, but at the end, you'll have to make a choice of where to go. Each hostess has a different selection. Here's largely how it breaks down:

Karaoke - Every hostess loves karaoke. Have her sing and you'll see the special movie of her song of choice.

Minigame - Darts, Bowling, and Pool are options depending on the hostess. Fulfill their request or beat them at the minigame to improve your hearts.

Dinner - Pick a restaurant and go eat. Each hostess has a particular dish they like, but I prefer to use this to complete that place's menu, because it's the only opportunity you'll have to order everything and not have to worry about your health being full.

Shopping - I caution against this, because you'll go to a boutique and she'll ask to buy something, and the only way to satisfy her is to shell out the cash for it.

Events
In this game, you might have little story dialogues during dates, but the only real event is the final event at 20 Hearts. Once you hit 20 Hearts, you may or may not have to come back for one more visit, where the hostess will mention one last thing about her troubles. You'll know you're ready to proceed when she hands you her "fancy business card".

The hostess will call with a problem and you'll have to help as something similar to a substory.
Once you complete this, you'll get your "special moment" with her. After that, wait until she texts you one last time with a selfie. This is the moment you've "completed" the hostess. You no longer have to deal with her if you don't want to, but you can still go to the club and talk, and you can ask her out if you to go to minigame locations (like Karaoke). If you approach the attendants, you may have the option of including a hostess.

The Joy of Gifting trophy
In Hostess dating, you will have the option of giving gifts to raise hostesses affection. Each girl likes a different outfit from the store Milestone in the Underground Mall. If the gift was right, on the next visit after giving the gift she will be wearing the outfit, thus earning you this trophy.

The following is each hostess, along with their correct gift:
  • Rio: Off Shoulder Dress
  • Noa Mizutani: Off Shoulder Dress
  • Erena Aihara: Off Shoulder Dress
  • Himeka Kawasaki: Mini Skirt Dress

@Andor
You need to complete Akiyamas hostess maker before going after Tanimuras. At the final chapter you get to switch between characters.
Andor 10 Aug @ 4:04pm
As Akiyama? If so then no, I did not do much side content as him as I figured out how it works later with the characters. Did all sub stores as Tanimura I could and now just started as Kiryu. I hope I will be able to go back to Seajima and Akiyama to do their stories before the final missions.

If you're not after achievements or completion then just ignore it.

So cutting a long story short, is it worth bothering with at all? It bores the shit out of me in these titles so I generally skim over it.
