Don't Forget To

Be The Acolyte

So, ya want to be just like our tentacle priestess? I know a few things on how to be on your way, without cursed tomes and spells.

Note: Be aware that that most of the gear that will be mentioned are free, open source, or "Buy this once. Own it forever." software in Steam or the actual net. Also, I won't be adding new software when they pop out in the store (so, we'll go in a "By the time this was posted" way, meaning that this gear guide is complete). Lastly, the reason why that I won't recommend Adobe, is that they are currently in trouble (They want customers to pay for their Dolby lawsuit bill, most companies don't do this when getting sued). Secondly, I am unfamiliar with Twitch, which is why I link some YT channels and subreddits, just to cover the bases.
Limited Tips On How To Be Like Ina
You are competing with artist clones of you in a "survival of the fittest" contest, the winner will get fame, money, and probably a job (slim chances of joining Hololive or one of its friendly rivals). The big guys that we love now, especially Ninomae Ina, used to be nobodies, working their butts off, and using wonky supplies, long before they audition and accepted in Hololive. But keep these in mind:

  • Money - YouTube (and it's rivals, like Twitch and Dailymotion) giving you a paycheck for all your effort is really unpredictable, it's base on if your stuff is ad friendly or not. One day your vids are good to go, the next day, they're offensive. It's a good idea to have a solid backup, like a part time job and do YT as a hobby or be Batman, boring doctor by day, Youtuber by night. The goods come later on.
  • Fame - This is a slow grind, start first by linking your channel(s) to your family, friends, and the social media sites were you're in. This will gradually grow, unless, you hit a big one.
  • Job - You, the wonderful wannabe Ina, needs to make content and upload quite a lot, even before making this as a part time job/full time job.

Additional Tips

  • Be your own unique self.
  • Only use Twitter, Reddit, and such as tools to advertise your Twitch channel/Youtube channel. Warning: Be sure that you don't neglect your channel(s), I know how just how easy it is to get distracted by the latest fad/drama.
  • Remember to always have fun, this path of being a VTuber is not just work.
Start Small With The Tri-State Area - Humble Beginnings

Now despite me linking the big fishes later on in the guide, like PHIA, Alpha Gaming, and the like. Remember we are just small fry, starting tiny, just buy the cheap/within your budget means but working tools. Ya don't need the fancy VRs, Cintiqs, and Blackmagic Design's cameras...Yet. (A few of their tutorials work for my broke butt set up and workflow).
First Steps For Vtuber Kind
How To Do A Debut

Be aware that a though a debut isn't super necessary, just as long as you make quality content and are active in social media. Ya can start the VTubing goodness without it, like Argama Witch.

Preparation

Before streaming/uploading your debut, start posting in your designated Twitter/Instagram/etc. account(s) to generate hype and two years in advance.

Introduction

This is were you're presenting yourself/your character.

Second Tip: You can debut as many times, like when your avatar changes, ranging to getting new duds or transitioning, like going 3D to 2D.

Your main focus

You explain what your channel's content is going to be.

Favorite things/Loathed things - Explaining what's your favorite and least liked topics for example, game genre(s), music(s), anime/manga, food, and other stuff.

Tip: Stream games that you love, it's gonna be a drag and tedious to play a game that ya hate/don't have much care for, even if that game is the in thing. This also works for other interests and hobbies.

Fan Mark

It's a designated cutie emoji for both you and to bond with fans, for fans to tell the world that they support you, it's also to identify one's self and your fans in social media sites, like Twitter.

Preparation

Post a week or two before the debut, so, one can generate hype. This Twitter thread can help a bit.

  • VTuber Debut (Twitter) - This Twitter community was made and ran by NishimiyaGaming. It's purpose is to advertise those that are gonna debut.

Shopping List And To Do List
This is merely a basic core idea of a set up, that way one won't get confused/ overwhelmed by things, like the gear lists.

  • Webcam or a computer that has a built in webcam.
  • Motion capture software and/or devices
  • Art software to draw the avatar.
  • A good mic./Good voice changer.
  • Tripod
  • Software to record gameplay footage, like OBS, XSplit, or StreamlabsOBS.
  • Capture card or a 2 PC set up, for all those gameplay footage.
  • Camcorder. - For traditional drawing and traditional drawing speedpaints.
  • Good drawing tablet or sketch book (for traditional drawings).

Mobile version

  • Mobile Phone/Tablet strong enough to function as a webcam.
  • Motion capture apps.
  • Art apps.
  • Apps to function like a clicker for Streamlabs, Twitch, and such.

Note:
Don't be disappointed about NOT getting the latest tech for your VTubing journey, the important thing is if you have working tech that gets the job done within your means. Remember you're starting out.

To Do List

  • Decide which type of avatar that you want, 2D or 3D.
  • Figure out what the feel of your avatar and a short bio which can be added to numerous social media profiles.*
  • Making a reference sheet of said character (whether it's commissioned or self-drawn).
  • The much needed poses that includes: The neutral face, the back in a neutral position, the side view, and color references. (Close up on specific areas of the clothing and different emotional headshots, like for anger, sadness, and so forth are optional).
  • Use social media to gain a following, but: use the same username in said sites, use secure two-factor authentication/password vaults, like KeePass or Dashlane, for said social media sites.
  • Keep the receipts/tickets of any transactions and some other things, so, just in case, you're falsely accused of something, you can have some sort of evidence to back up your claims and prove your innocence.
  • Figure out what's your niche and make content for it.
  • Communicate with and networking with the relevant people and communities.

* Here's a tutorial on how to hire an artist for commissioning one.

Bet you're asking, why would Kawaii Thrombocytes* put the guy who made the Stereotype series in a VTubing guide? It's because Soundsmith is a bit OCD (sound designer woes) when it comes to sound, he knows sound, and his sound tutorials will make you rise. He also linked a guy that's better than him and here's said guy's the playlist: How To Be An Online Voice Actor

Gah, The Chemistry!!
This chapter involves getting shipped in a mostly romantic pairings with other VTubers. Remember: You don't have control over what some of your fans will do, some will listen and respect the boundaries, some won't listen. Ya can only do so much.

Here's some "ancient" history of an aftermath of a real life shipping gone haywire and killed itself, due to the bad eggs. The bad eggs ruin it for everyone, even for the respectful shippers.

Now it depends on several factors, like are you okay with it? Since some of the fans are gonna go down the "It always gets sexual..." aisle. Be sure you set some sort of boundaries set between you, your fans, and that way you and your fans can "preserve" what's good about the ship (Even if the fanfic/fanart gets rather steamy) for a long while. Some Youtubers are okay with their fans making mostly romance fics/arts about them and will sometimes read the fanfictions in their vids. Others are not. Shipping entails interactions, to shippers, even the most innocuous interaction is some sort of chemistry, whether it's friendship or romance, are the reasons why they support their ship(s).

Give a few reminders that you're a real person at the end of the day, not a literal god that killed Cronus and avenge your siblings.
Some of the sadden risks about Youtuber shipping, and at times, the disrespectful fans will even go so far to do false accusations, wrecking friendships between you and your friend/YouTube family member, or worst, your actual significant other.
The "VTweeters" And Cancel Culture Bits
Note: Not every politically motivated Twitter user, who are mostly Left leaning/votes Democrat (In a North American sense), that dub themselves as "VTweeters" (I saw a few YTers with this name), and who uses pronouns in their bios is gonna be toxic. But the ones that I will mention make the decent/non-toxic ones look bad.

This was mentioned in the glossary earlier, but this chapter goes in further details and how to avoid and/or combat them.

A " VTweeter(s) is an individual that usually have:

  • Pronouns, "En VTuber", and "pre-debut", in their bios.
  • Some are people that are outside your established/growing fanbase that just want to get an "excuse" to witch hunt.
  • Mostly on Twitter and/or be on Twitter 24/7.
  • Insanely political and mostly Left leaning/votes Democrat (There's also some Right leaning/Votes Republican or some Centralist that's also part of this list.).
  • Using their personas for political reasons, only for this purpose.
  • Being "lazy".- They don't make content of any sort for YouTube, Twitch, and etc., not even going further and becoming a political VTuber, mainly just staying on Twitter and Tweeting.
** They're even too lazy to help those they claim to care about.
** The VTweeters got upset that Calliope advise them to create anything to jumpstart their careers, even if it's tiny.
  • An a-hole to other Vtubers, VTweeters, and anyone in general whether it's tiny guys trying to make it/getting started, big fishes (like Calliope Mori, who offered survival advise), and artists, especially Japanese artists.
  • Usually starts internet drama, mainly on Twitter, and attacks mostly innocent VTubers (and other people in general).
  • Loves to start internet witch hunts, drama, and engages in cancel culture. - Especially if you're at the receiving end.

Here's a few common phrases that they normally use:

  • "That drawing/your avatar is sexist."/"Go outside and get a life, you don't know what a real woman looks like." - These types of replies are usually on an innocent artist's work, which is either mild, or a sex positive ones (like sakimichan, a female artist that does mostly fanservice). (Though they will use these terms on SFW stuff, if they hate the art or hate you in general).
  • "A White guy can't use a Black/Person of Color avatar."
  • "You're doing fat shaming!"
  • "Person X needs to be held accountable." - The lying excuse when others critique them for being judge, jury, and executioner.
  • "You're a coward for not getting politically involved." - They basically believe EVERYTHING has to be political.
  • "You're racist/sexist/homophobic.etc." - They will accuse you of being this, despite that you don't have a racist/sexist/homophobic.etc bone in your body, that you're a Person Of Color, or part of the LGBTQ community. Mainly because you disagree with what they say or you're strictly trying to be an entertainer and nothing more.

Preventive Measures

Set measures when you start advertising your Vtube brand, since mostly work and lessen your chances of getting caught by them.
  • Have a separate Twitter account for your Vtubing activities.
  • Don't mention politics.
  • Don't use jokes, sarcasm, or parody/satire on Twitter.
  • Stay in your own niche/ group that you're trying to grow.
  • Post all that Vtubing goodness/connecting to your fans in other social media sites where you know that Vtweeters aren't in high contrations.

Some Things To Do In Case They Attack You

Do not apologize to them what ever you do, even though you know that you are truly innocent, because unlike regular people, VTweeters don't believe in forgiveness, that people can make efforts to become a better person, change to be a better person, and second chances. (A few are even jealous of talented people, even of you, who is trying to make something good, interesting, and wonderful). An apology or clarification means that they can be like sharks smelling blood in the water and are infamous for dogpiling and demand for you to apologize for what is deem offensive I their eyes. - Most of the cases that I hear of, their victims are mostly innocent that are doing things for fun, especially if its innocuous fun, innocent people things/people that change for the better, or the VTweeters just backtrack to some insane ancient old Tweet.

How To Defend Yourself

  • Stand your ground.
  • Don't quit your Vtubing career, just because of them.
  • Block and report.
  • Have strong friends and family to help you/back you, especially to help pick up the pieces of your life.
  • If you think it's a troll, don't reply to them./"feed" them. (Trolls sometimes bait people to expose their inner flaws).
  • Don't be afraid to call the cops on these guys, because some of the VTweeters will resort to committing actual criminal acts.
  • Established shop at Twitter's rivals, like Instagram. (I noticed some streamers, especially other VTubers just set up at Instagram and ignore Twitter entirely).

Final Words
Just have fun on your new journey and life of being a VTuber, I am happy that I assist in a tiny way.

Help
  • I need help for grammar corrections.
  • Getting some corrections on facts and advice that I may gotten incorrect.
  • Starting the French and Japanese versions of this guide, but I regard this like the Uplay/Ubisoft Connect guides, too serious that I won't go near yet, until, I learn how to read, spell, and speak those languages in a conversation level.
  • Finding some new tips to be added to the guide, I mean tips that I or my sources didn't cover yet. Also, news about Adobe, like if they survive their lawsuit, fail, or meeting a compromise with Dolby.
Appendix
A few things that I wasn't able to add in the main guide.
Cue obligatory Dr. Doof. sob backstory reason of why he wants to calibrate his "Holographic Alien-ator" for VTubing, that or he wants to collab with Vanessa for father-daughter bonding reasons.
