Controller stopped working? Get your fix here.

Has your controller randomly decided to stop working or suddenly doesn't work anymore after X amounts of relaunching the game? Restarting the game didn't help? Rebooting your PC didn't help either? Well I might have the solution for you, without having to do weird stuff like going into the Steam big picture controller configuration or messing with HID in device manager.

DISCLAIMER: This main solution is solely for the scenario described above, if your controller stops working after X amounts of relaunching the game or it stopped in the middle of the game while you were alt-tabbed or using the overlay. If your controller does not work at all there's going to be different solution I'll have to add over time.

Navigate to the DarkSoulsRemastered.exe by going to your Steam library, right clicking on DS:R and selecting "browse local files"

Step 2

Right click the .exe and click "run as administrator".

That's it. That's the fix. If for whatever reason DS:R stops recognizing your controller and even a PC reboot doesn't fix it, this should. It does for me anyway.

You don't need to run the game as admin all the time, once you run it one time as admin it'll fix the problem for a while. If you want you can close the game and run it normally right after and it should keep working.

Alternative Issues & Solutions

Issue: "Failed to initialize Steam", when trying to run the game as admin via either right clicking "run as admin" or setting the exe's properties to "run as admin".

Solution: No clue, for me personally running the game's exe as admin while Steam's running has no issues. No idea if it's related to the Windows version of anything else, I am on Win10 1909.

I tried everything, I got frustrated and tried the stupid " Ctrl-Alt-Del" thing and I don't know how, but it still works in 2024. Apparently it's a strange bug.
If it doesn't work for you, do the thing about changing the game from Borderless to Fullscreen

The first solution did not work, got the error message. But the second one did. No idea why my controller decided to not work anymore, but thank you for posting this, helped me out a lot.
