Nevermind, I found the problem. I'm running this game on my iMac via Boot Camp/Windows 8.1, and it can't find the audio driver, so I connected my bluetooth headphones and I was able to play the game with your sugested settings.
Spasibo for your support.
I just installed the game on W8.1 to verify, and for me it still runs without problem using the configuration settings shown above. If you haven't done so already, could try using exactly those values, and then launching the game without trying to skip the pre-menu sequence?
In case it makes any difference, what brand of GPU do you have? I've checked for both Nvidia and Intel.
Do you have any update on this topic? I'm trying to launch the game on Windows 8.1, I tried to use your configuration tips but the game still does not launch.
"Metro 2 stopped working"
For a not so dodgy way to get the Audiere.DLL file needed to fix the game's sound and music on a site with HTTPS, its SourceForge archive (where the Audiere libraries were officially stored by its original developers) can be found here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/audiere/files/
The game shipped with Audiere 1.9.3, but its .DLL file is not only not the latest version, but also has an almost guaranteed chance of being corrupted. Replacing it with the latest 1.9.4 library not only works for this game, but also other games using the Orion Games "Orion" engine, such as Red Veil and DUSK-12.

While this is also yet another download link and goes against the notion of the guide, it bypasses the Patch 1.2 link hosted on an old and HTTP-only Orion Games archive link that many have reposted before now.
