Dethroned - Capping and upgrades, a bit more than the basics.

This guide aims to educate new and old players of Dethroned! on some of the more subtle gameplay quirks concerning capturing mines and victory points in addition to the building/upgrading of buildings.

Capping - Mines and Victory Points
Capturing of victory points and mines can only be done if there are no enemy units near the point. Capping is done by having at least one unit near the point for 10 (for victory points) or 8 (for gold mines) seconds.

Starting out - What to cap first

Most (perhaps all) maps in dethroned start out the same. You have one mine captured, and on your side of the map there is one more gold mine and one victory point to capture. What should be captured first; the point, or the mine?

Although victory points are an important part of winning the game, gold mines provide gold enabling you to build faster and pump out those units to send charging into your enemies base. The choice is your's (I recommend the mine), but when making it you should consider where you want your hero to push/defend and where your barracks will be placed. Don't forget that your minions can capture points and mines as well!

The push - After the first cap

Once you decide what you want to cap first, push forward, do not return to your base unless it's to heal or defend.

Because the center points are roughly the same distance from the first victory point/mine, unless you capped the point first, there is nothing to gain by returning to your base (which is why i recommend the mine be captured first).

A start for the win - The result of the push

By now there should be a few things happening. Not only do you have the choice of pushing into the enemies base, but your soldiers have probably started fighting thier way into your enemies base. Now you have the choice of fighting with your soldiers, or going on to capture points and/or mines in the enemies base.

Within every base there is a gold mine and a victory point close together. If you stand between them, you can capture both in one play. If you captured your mine and continued to push forward, this is directly ahead of your captured center point.

Resource denial - Not enough minerals

When capturing your enemy points and mines, it's important to remember that captured mines provide you valuable income, but denying income to your enemy can be just as important. This is especially true if your enemy upgraded thier mine early.
Upgrades - Tips and Tricks
Upgrades are an important part of ingame progression. Upgrading barracks increases the amount of minions that can be spawned and also enabled you to spawn more powerful minions. Upgrading mines allows you to produce and store for more gold.

I won't bother discussing defensive structures, because they can be understood in one sentence; Upgrading defensive structures does exactly what the tooltip says.

Upgrading Barracks

An important thing to keep in mind, is that barracks do not produce minions while upgrading. Because upgrades take 30 seconds, you need to make sure to start to the upgrade with at least 31 seconds left on the wave timer (located at the top center of the UI). You may also want to give yourself a few seconds more to allow yourself time to purchase new minions once the upgrade is complete.

If there isn't 30 seconds until the next wave, wait to upgrade until after the wave spawns. Otherwise, you're just denying yourself a wave of minions.

Upgrading Mines

Upgrading your mines can give you a huge advantage later in the game, but will put you at a significant shortage of cash in the short term. Not only do mines cost 100 gold to upgrade, but while they are upgrading they do not produce gold, making the actual cost much closer to 150 gold (100 gold - the gold which would have been produced without upgrade = a total cost of roughly 150 gold).

The "Offensive" Upgrade - Because mines do not produce gold while upgrading, a viable strategy to deny your enemy gold is to start an upgrade before they finish capturing the mine. If you can recapture the mine before the upgrade is complete, you've denied the enemy an important strategic advantage.
Conclusion and Comments
I hope this guide will be helpful. If you find any of the information to be wrong, please let me know via the comments.

This is my first guide, but I have been a gamer for over 20 years, with my first RTS being Dune 2, and my first MOBA, DOTA.

Feel free to add me as a friend, I'm always looking for more people to play with. I'm currently level 14, rank 1 with 61 victories and 7 defeats.

Best wishes and Good Game
