Making it easier
Why this guide got made:

I spent almost 50hrs in Assetto Corsa tweaking the settings of my x360 controller. These are the ones, which I came up with, gave me the best control over each car. Every personal best was made with these. After reading through the thread where Kunos is improving the controller support, I saw that the best guys on RSR Leaderboards (with controllers) Shaddix and Jim Liak use similar settings. These kinda are what you defaultly look for, to start off with tweaking it further to your liking ;)

Were can you find these settings?:

x:\Steam\SteamApps\common\assettocorsa\cfg\controllers\presets\

and

x:\Users\X_USER_X\Documents\Assetto Corsa\cfg\controllers\

The settings can be found under these two folders. Before 0.8, it was needed to tweak them as a file to put in for example deadzone 0.03 in, since this wasn't doable in the UI.

My settings:

Gamma=2.2
Filter=0.82
Speed Sensitivity=75% (previously, the value was 0.25 in the cfg, now it is 0.75)
Deadzone=0.04
Steering Speed=100%

Settings by Shaddix:

Gamma=2.1
Filter=0.85
Speed Sensitivity=73%
Deadzone=0.05 (0.03 till v0.85)
Steering Speed=100%

DS4 / x1 Console settings

Speed sensitivity 75% (revised after v1.09 on PS4)
Steering speed 100%
Filter 82%
Deadzone 4% [2-5%, might vary with controller]
Gamma 2.2

Feel free to try both of them and tweak em further to your liking. It is fact, that there are many versions of a simple x360 controller which sometimes have better/worse precision or different behaivour, so these might not really fit for everyone.

Further tweaking:

Gamma makes the car go from twitchy, very precise, to numb, almost dull when steering. If you go full left immediately, the input does it much faster with a lower gamma. The center of the stick basically becomes more sensitive while steering.

Filter simply put filters out errorous movement, like little hickups of your fingers while maintaining a fast corner. Lowering the setting makes the input more responsive.

Explanation of the settings model in v0.8 vs old versions (by Giovanni Romagnoli):

just to be clear about the new changes : the old method used a function similar to this one for speed sens.:

old max steer : 1 / ( 1 + speed sensitivity * speed)

Link to picture @ AC Forum [www.assettocorsa.net]

as you see from the image that generated a huge loss in max steer at low speed, if you changed SS that didn't changed that much.

new max steer = 10 ^ (-(x^2))

Link to picture @ AC Forum [www.assettocorsa.net]

as you can see from the new method image that allows you to have a smaller change of max steer at low speeds, also Speed Sensitivity in this case "Cuts" the function to your desired max steer lower bound

The hands of the driver are moving really fast when using these controller settings and it doesn't look natural at all, therefore, its vital to lock the Virtual Steering Wheel to a lower value. The lower value you lock the virtual steering wheel to the slower will the hands of the driver move. Btw. I use the value 360.

As Oleh suggested in the comments, its very useful to increase the G force effect under the Display settings (suggested value 3x for each) since it helps feel the car better. Since you are missing out on the force feedback sense that this game provides, its good to be able to subsidize it with this feature which provides better feel for the car and its dynamics.

I'm currently using these settings with my x1 controller. Since 0.21.4, it is possible to use the x1 with AC, before this version, there was a 95% CPU occupancy issue. The settings fit perfectly for the x1 controller and the triggers have unmatched precision, I'm sticking with the x1 one.

So much on the topic of setting up your controller. Since some users experience performance issues, or don't own the most high-end rigs, I decided to add this guide of BRT Cobra (thank you BRT Cobra for the permission) since it seems that its really helpful and sorted issues of many users. Give it a shot !

Injoy, I'd be glad if you'd leave some feedback if you like these settings and tips. If you have any suggestion or would like to get anything added to the guide, please feel free to leave a comment.

The comment from Ulysses is so helpful, it’s the only setup that would work decent enough with the DualShock 4 Controller, thanks a bunch.
