In my research, I only found one hint posted by the developers of the game that there was a secret still hidden, found on a itch.io discussion board for the game:[itch.io]

...If the timers are causing you trouble, maybe after starting a game in Extreme mode (and having some patience!) you'll be able to find some Help in the game on how to skip them...?

This hint is technically all you need to find the secret, but true to their word, it does require some patience. If you're still struggling to find the secret...

The Solution

I'll be honest, I found this on accident while googling around on how to find the secret. Here is the solution:

Start Extreme mode or load a save from Extreme mode.
Pause the game, Click "Help" and scroll all the way to the bottom.
Wait for ~30 seconds. After that time, you should see "a super secret ability on certain screens" fade in slowly.
On a timer screen, press the keys. The timer should instantly jump to 5 seconds.

For what it's worth, there's another way to do this. When you hit a long delay, use the scroll wheel to tick up one slot in the history, and then immediately scroll down multiple times in one swipe. Sometimes the game will seem to freeze, and I think it happens when the delay is really long, but when it wakes back up, the delay counter will have gone down to 00:00:00 and you can proceed. It's a little easier than the spoilered method here, although it's kinda fun to go look it up in-game anyway. 😀
