Why People Hate Combat Medics
Up until now, you've probably wondered why it is that so many people seem to hate the Combat Medic. Common sense would say "Well, they're here to heal me. They'll help us win. They'll keep us alive.". Unfortunately, this isn't always the case. I've seen many Combat Medics who focus solely on killing zeds and not doing the core duty their class is meant to fulfill: Keep the team alive and healthy, by any means necessary. As a Combat Medic, this means putting yourself literally in harm's way to keep the team alive. I've seen Combat Medics who just sit in the back and just focus on healing people, or sometimes just killing zeds. I've been in games where I was playing as a Berzerker and still healed more than our Combat Medic. Hopefully the following sections will teach you to play to the classes' core function and remove the bad aura that the Combat Medic name carries.
Combat Medic: Tank, Healer, Lifesaver
As a Combat Medic, your three basic duties are:

1. Absorb damage for less durable teammates.

2. Heal your teammates and keep them from dying.

3. Use whatever means necessary to keep your team in fighting condition.

Absorb damage for less durable teammates

When you see a Fleshpound or Scrake, your first instinct is to put as much distance between you and them before you unload. With the Combat Medic, the opposite can be true. Combat Medic armor is the most durable out of any other perk, meaning that you can serve as an extrememly effective tank. If a Fleshpound is charging a teammate that is about to die, step in between and take the hits. In actuality, a high level Combat Medic can actually take Fleshpound blows rather comfortably, buying valuable time for injured teammates to assume a better firing position or acquire healing. If some Husks are harassing your team and threatening to cause deaths, take one for the team and take the shots. This isn't to say that you act like a mindless meatshield; be proactive with your duties and your team will reap the benefits later on.

Heal your teammates and keep them from dying

Before I say anything else, this isn't to say that the Combat Medic is a mindless healing dart dispenser. You have to remember that you have other duties. In order to be most effective with your healing, you could for example, carry 2 medic guns. This way, when one gun's charge is depleted you can switch to the other one so you won't have to wait. Also, it pays to stay close to your teammates and push Tab in order to check everyone's health.

Use whatever means necessary to keep your team in fighting condition

When playing as a Combat Medic, do not think that you aren't allowed to carry firepower. As a matter of fact, it is encouraged that you carry a good amount of firepower with you when playing as a Medic. You'll have to be able to dish out damage; it will help save your team. Summary
Just remember that when playing as a Combat Medic, your goal is to keep your team alive and in fighting condition, no matter what the cost to yourself. This guide is a WiP, so if there's anything you feel I've left out, just comment in the comments section and I'll do my best to fix it up. Until then, happy healing.

nice guide :) mostly focused on medics behavior and could use some equipement tips, but you explained what i think is the most important things a medic should know.

about the fire-power part, i suggest the medics look at how the team is built. what i do is : if there are no high damage perks (like sharpshooter, support, demo) i carry a MP5 + x-bow + MK23. otherwise i go with 3 mediguns to focus on healing.

Everybody hates "Combat Medics" ? What is this ? Of course you're a combat medic, there's a mutant clone outbreak!!

Medic is everyones duty regardless or chosen perk. I have only played medic once this reset I'm lvl 5 medic almost lvl 6 this will be my 6th reset of my perks soon. Self healing should only be used if you are about to die!

I fully agree with you Nymph.

Im a level 6 medic and from my experience, typically the medic saves waves. If you're the medic that stays in the back, or if something goes really wrong, typically the medic is the last one left. Due to the amount they heal and their speed, the medic can typically solo a wave after the team dies. This ends up taking awhile due to the slowness of kiting, but it is very useful once the team is highly invested into the game.

Not much more to add. Those are some nice reminders on how to be the most effective medic, especially on tougher difficulties. If I think of anything you should add or ammend, I'll be sure to comment.

and here for some reason I thought the combat medic didn't get an armor buff like the Field does

When playing Med I'd also recommend practise playing as a good Zerk would, i.e. carry an Axe or Katana, these weapons need no ammo top up (obviously) and can virtually assure the wave continuing even if the rest of the team go down, as long as the player has the nous to do so, some say "But what about scrakes" in this situation, short of using the Hunting Shottgun 'special move' I don't think many people are aware you can outrun a 'raging' scrake and watch it run itself to death if you put enough distance between yourself and the scrake, this takes a little practice, but can be and is highly effective, as for FP a Medics faster movement speed makes 'kiting' the FP reasonably easy to kill although it takes a little longer to do so than a Zerk can.

I only play as a medic i think im level 3 going on 4 and i enjoy it but i used to consintrate on killing instead of healing and 1 it makes it difficult to level seeing as leveling up is all about healing and 2 the team keeps dieing. thanks alot as a medic i am more aware of its tanking abilities.
