Translations are saved in text files with a file name ending in ".language.csv" (without the quotes). The translations that come with the game are located in the Languages folder among the game files. Your custom language files should be placed under your Windows profile at:

C:\Users\Your_user\AppData\LocalLow\Lapioware\Diesel Railcar Simulator\Languages\

To start off you can copy the default language file into the language folder under your profile. You may need to create the Languages folder if it doesn't already exist.

A single file may contain multiple languages. If you copied the default languages and you're going to make translations for just one language, you can remove the extra ones.

Missing or empty translations will fall back to English.



File format

Language files are UTF-8 encoded text files. The format is CSV with comma as the value separator. These type of files can be opened and edited with a text editor or a spreadsheet program like Excel or LibreOffice Calc. However, Excel might not work correctly if your Windows is set to a language other than English (like Italian), and will corrupt the file instead.

Values (texts) can be enclosed in double quotes, but it's not necessary unless the value has a comma or multiple lines. Double quotes inside the double-quoted value must be encoded with two double quotes. A spreadsheet program usually takes care of these automatically, given the correct settings.

The first row in the file is currently ignored, but can (and should) be used for author and contributor information.

The second row contains all the languages (their names), one per cell. The first cell must be empty.

The data from the third row onwards are the actual translations.

The first column in the file is the key which the program uses to look up the correct row when searching for a translation to show on the screen. The keys must not be changed. The second column contains the translations for the first language in the file, the third column for the second language etc.

Some keys are in upper-case letters. In these cases the translation should be too. Some (usually short) keys are identical to the English translation, others are longer and more artificial.

Some translations have variables marked with X1, X2, X3 etc. The variables will be replaced automatically with another piece of text (service name for example) depending on the context.



Things to consider

The most difficult and time-consuming texts to translate are tips, graphics options, general settings and their descriptions. The graphics options might not even have official agreed-upon translations in all languages. To save time, you can leave these untranslated.

Editors are currently not translated.

Since the game is still evolving, there will be changes to the language files: new keys may be added and old ones removed. The files included in the game should always have the most up-to-date list.



Sharing

To upload your language file to the Steam Workshop, open the language screen from the main menu globe icon in the game and click on the upload button. Only files that are located in the Languages folder of your Windows profile can be uploaded.

To share the file without using Steam Workshop, simply make it available for download and instruct users to place the file in their profile folder at:

C:\Users\Your_user\AppData\LocalLow\Lapioware\Diesel Railcar Simulator\Languages\
