Introduction
In Mann Vs Machine, the Soldier is an extremely useful, damage dealing class where most teams will consist of atleast one. It's not the hardest class to play, but a good level of knowledge is needed to play at the highest level. His primary role is obviously to deal as much damage as possible to the enemy robots, mainly through the use of his primary weapon, the rocket launcher. However he also useful by supporting the teammates with his buff banner.

(Note that this guide is opiniated, you may have a different and preffered way of playing the class.)

A Short Video Guide to Playing The Soldier

Loadout

The loadout for the Soldier mainly revolves around the primary and secondary weapon.

The primary weapon, or the type of the Rocket Launcher, does vary in terms of preference but I do prefer playing with the Stock Rocket Launcher. The Beggar's Bazooka and Black Box are the other two most popular launchers but there are certain drawbacks to these.

For your secondary, don't bother using your Shotgun, go for a banner. The Buff Banner has the most support for the team as it gives all nearby teammates mini-crits which can take down giants or tanks rapidly. The Battalion's Backup can be useful if you and your team and recieving a lot of damage, but 9 times out of 10, the Buff Banner works best.

For your melee weapon, go for the Escape Plan. It's movement speed increasing effect can be a lifesaver if you're out of ammo or a require a healthpack.

Remember in Mann Vs Machine to always equip your Power-Up Canteen.
Upgrades
For upgrades you're going to first of all go for Reload Speed and Clip Size for your Rocket Launcher. After this you're going to focus on upgrading the Damage of your launcher along with Rocket Specialist and Firing Speed. If you've got any extra cash, go for Ammo Capacity.

You will also want to increase the Duration of your Buff Banner to help your teammates.

Later on you may want to invest in Resistances to help keep you alive.

For Canteens I'd suggest you go for Crits so you can deal massive damage or invest in Uber Charges if you're taking heavy punishment.
Playing the Soldier
As I said earlier your primary role is about dealing damage and killing enemy robots. And to do this it's pretty self explanatory, just constantly shoot rockets at them and reload when you have the opportunity. If you find yourself low on ammo, try to sit around your Engineer's dispenser or find an ammo pack which should keep you topped on rockets.

When the large groups of lower health robots appear you'll have easy pickings just by shooting directly into the centre of them. With the larger giant robots, you're going to want to aim your rockets to directly hit them as your Rocket Specialist Upgrade will stun them for a very short amount of time.

Your secondary role is to build up rage with your Buff Banner and deploy it so you and your teamates can deal large amounts of damage to the tougher enemies. When you use the banner to get mini-crits, try to make sure your Rocket Launcher is fully reloaded so that you can make maximum use of the buff's duration. Also try to stick near the other damage dealing classes such as a Heavy or an Engineer while the mini-crits are active. Deploying it at the right time is also key, try to use it when tough giant robots or a tank appears.

Using your melee weapon isn't too important, try to use it as a last resort, the movement speed increase can get you out of sticky situations for health and ammo but there is a risk as you cannot be healed aswell as being marked with mini-crits for a short period of time after you put it away.

Often I see soldiers in Mann vs Machine rocket jumping but I'd advise you to avoid doing it unless you want to quickly get to a healthpack. The damage caused by the jump will often be large enough for any enemy robots to spot you in the air and easily take you out. My final tip is to never stop shooting, you want to constantly keep up the damage output.

I'd suggest upgrading Firing Speed before Clip Size. Or just not upgrading Clip Size at all.
