Why doesn't GTi Racing support resolutions higher than 1024x768?
This boils down to the game's initial release. GTi Racing was released on August 24th, 2006 at the time where 4:3 resolutions (800x600, 1024x768 etc) were at an all time high. In 2003, computer monitors had aspect ratios of 4:3 with some at 5:4. During this time monitors with 16:10 aspect ratio were becoming more commonly available. First in laptops, then later followed by standalone computer monitors. During the development of GTi Racing, one can only assume that the developers wanted to appeal to the most common aspect ratio which, at the time, was 4:3. This explains why both resolutions available in the game are two of the most common 4:3 resolutions: 800x600 and 1024x768.

It was only during the game's release where 16:9 resolutions were becoming more available to people. Reasons as to why the game wasn't patched with updated configurations is yet to be known.
How-To
Luckily, possibly by mistake, the developers have made it easy to configure the given resolutions to your liking. All it takes is the changing of one file. Just one!

Step 1:

Navigate to your SteamApps folder assuming you have the game downloaded and in default locations. The two most common locations are:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps (If you're on a 64 bit machine)
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps (If you're on a 32 bit machine)

Once you're there, go ahead and delve within the common folder where all of your games are located. Look for the GTi Racing folder. Once you're in there locate the folder entitled Data.

Step 2:

Now that you've got the boring part out of the way, look for a file entitled VideoSettings. Once you've found that you're going to need to open a blank .txt document. You can do this by:

Windows XP: Going to Start > All programs > Accessories > Notepad

Windows Vista, 7 and those who use Start8: Start > Click the search box > Type in notepad and open

Windows 8/8.1: Navigate to the charms menu and then click the search button. Type in 'notepad' and then click the result to open it.

Step 3:

Now that you've got the world's most basic text editor open you're going to need to drag VideoSettings into the text editor. You should be greeted with this:

!Resolution(i,i) !BPP(i) !FSAA(i) // Full Screen AntiAliasing, 0 - none, higher is better !TexBPP(i) !TextureQuality(s) // VeryLow, Low, Normal, High !Filtering(s) // Bilinear, Trilinear, Anisotropic, AnisotropicTrilinear !Gamma(i) !MaxRefresh(i) !Shadows(s) // None, Blobs, ShadowMaps !Lightmaps() !Fullscreen() !MaterialQuality(i) // higher is better !FXQuality(i) // higher is better !WaterQuality(i) // higher is better !EnvQuality(s) // FullDynamic, RareDynamic, Static Resolution(1024,768) BPP(32) FSAA(6) TexBPP(32) TextureQuality("High") Filtering("Trilinear") Fullscreen() Shadows("Blobs") Gamma(2) MaxRefresh(85) MaterialQuality(4) FXQuality(0) WaterQuality(2) EnvQuality("Static")

Looks frightening doesn't it? Don't worry. You'll only be changing one parameter.

Resolution(1024,768)

If you know your native resolution you can go ahead and type it in. 1024 = Width, 768 = Height. For example my configuration would be 1920x1080 since that's my native resolution. If you need help finding your native resolution then please refer to this wikiHow guide[m.wikihow.com].

Step 4:

Once that's over and done with you can go ahead and save the file. Navigate to File > Save. Note: You won't have to go through the File > Save As process seeing as you've opened the file from its respective location (Data folder)

There you have it! Open the game and enjoy GTi Racing at your preferred resolution!
Things you need to consider
Changing your settings in-game display settings will reset your configuration file back to what it was before. Any parameter within the display settings (Graphic quality, etc) will reset it. If you would like to upscale your settings please keep this in mind. Just follow the guide again to get back to your preferred resolution.

This guide also applies to the game Xpand Rally which belongs to the same developers of GTi Racing.

Works great! It stretches the menu, but it DOES NOT stretch the in-game image, that renders fine at 2560x1440. It's a fun arcade racer and works fine on Windows 10.

Unfortunately, this doesn't really work as well as it sounds. The games simply stretch 4:3 assets to whatever non-4:3 setting you pick, looking awful as a result.

@NihokSan - No problem! You can drag almost anything into Notepad and it'll read it. Just have the Notepad window open and drag the file into the Notepad window.

@BlackToothGrinz - I saw you posted this back in April and I've only just seen this now. Sorry! It's a shame no one plays these. I haven't played Xpand Rally but I really enjoy GTI Racing. Great little racer!

Great, thanks ! i knew the editing part but never did it with the drag technique (as we cannot right click open with notepad). Cool i learned something new

Awesome I'll try thanks. Too bad nobody still plays this & Xpand rally online, i know they're old. I just fired it back up briefly, but it would be fun to get a small group or a few together on certain nights to play a few online, I've never been able to find anyone online to play over internet, though I got these games cheap a few years after they came out, like 09'-10'? Lol Old School now.
