If there is anything truly close to "unfair events" from MnB2 then it is gas wave... Just get out of gas fast and farm morale with hot chow long before you get hit with one is only advice I can really give... Smoke/Gas clouds are unlikely to cover map edges so you could play around it by placing infantry on flanks

Veterans ignore pinned enemies if they can but snipers do not care about prone status inaccuracy and will want to kill officers so one or two should be good to reliably remove support units, they might have trouble gaining xp at first though because of slow aim time, if you give them special training they will do quick double shots instead which is very often death of target.

does the sniper have enough ability to kill the officer?
