Enable 256 color VGA mode
In the steamapps folder, find the folder for Impossible Mission II and edit the bottom of the three CONF files like this:

[autoexec] MOUNT C .\C C: CD IM2 IM2_MCGA EXIT
Note that you only change the "IM" line to "IM2_MCGA". This works too with CGA and the other modes. Note: I could not get the 256 color mode to run anymore at the time of the last edit to this guide.

Enable the option to take screenshots and use the Steam overlay
Change the [sdl] section in the three CONF files as mentioned above to OpenGL output like this:
output=opengl
Hat tip to Neozeed for providing this information in the comments.

Title Screen in VGA

Start new game
Press F1 to start a new game. After pressing it, you will see a summary of the previous game. If you made it to the highscore list, you can enter your name (five spaces), then press Enter to start the new game.

Sound
This game only supports the PC speaker, as sound cards were not common back then.

Save a game
Press Alt - S (You get no feedback whatsoever, but it works.). The game supports only one save state.

Load a savegame
You can only load the save state when you are asked for it when you load the game: Press y (z on QWERTZ keyboards) to load the save state; any other key starts a new game.

Pause the game
Press Esc to pause the game, Enter to resume.

Quit the game
Alt + Q

I tested the save function. Alt-S does work, you just don't get any feedback that it worked. When you start the game, you are asked if you want to load a game. If no, press n; if yes, press y (z on QWERTZ keyboards). It then loads the only save state, and you then start in the elevator at the height of the room you saved the last time. Progress is saved, like already scanned items, as they are still gone.
Loading a game with F2 does not work; I will edit the guide accordingly.

Pressing Alt + S doesn´t save the game at all. Anyone who knows how to?

The C64 version is not available, but I also have the first part on Steam, which is the C64 Version emulated. Also, I am a sucker for 256-color VGA graphics, and the C64 version of the second part falls way short in this regard.

Play the Commodore 64 version instead. Its better than this. Unbelievable I know, but it is!

I suppose the Adlib card was not really in widespread use when they made the game.

PcJr was 1985. adlib was 1987. It's bizzare they have MCGA being bleeding edge of 1987 graphics but pc speaker?

Having played this on both Amiga and Commodore 64, I didn't even know there was a PC version

This is from 1988, sound cards were not really a thing then.

Oh also change the [sdl] section output to OpenGL and you can do screen shots and the overlay:

[code]output=opengl[/code]

MCGA is great. I do get speaker "music" but it's terrible. How did this not have AdLib?! or even Roland MPU support?
