Quick overview
In order to finish the game, the player's group must find several pieces of a map. The entire map consists of 9 pieces, but 7 pieces are enough to proceed with the storyline.

The group may fail to receive some of these pieces if character values are too low or if bad dialog options are chosen. Two of the pieces can only be retrieved by talking to people who are encountered in the game at random.

A unicorn can also help retrieve a missing map piece.
Swafnild Egilsdotter
One of the map pieces is held by Swafnild Egilsdotter. Her piece is the legit version of the fake piece given to to you by Hjore Ahrensson of Ottarje.

Swafnild Egilsdotter can only be met in harbors because she sails up and down the coasts all the time. To meet her, you must know of her existence (several informants mention her name), and at least three months must have passed since you initiated the main quest in Thorwal.

Every time you enter a harbor, there is a small chance of your group encountering Swafnild. It does not matter where you are, you may encounter Swafnild in any harbor in the game. With every month that passes in-game, your odds of meeting her increase by 1%, the starting odds are 7%.

To make sure you meet her, you just need to visit harbors frequently. Make the character with the highest charisma value your group's leader (by putting him to the very left in the character list) because this increases your chance of receiving the map during the first encounter.

When talking to Swafnild, ask her about a map, and when she offers to go get it, join her and travel with her on the ship. If she does not give you the map during this first encounter, you can try again later by visiting harbors until you meet her again.
Treborn Kolberg
One map piece is held by the traveling merchant Treborn Kolberg. You can meet him on any road you can travel on foot in the game, but at least four months must have passed since you initiated the main quest in Thorwal.

Due to a bug in the game code, you will never encounter Kolberg if you have already talked to informant Algrid Trondesdotter of Hjalsingor! She does not have a map piece, so either don't talk to her at all or only talk to her after you have gotten Kolberg's map piece.

Every time your group begins a journey on foot, there is a 2% chance of meeting either Kolberg or the bard Olvir (who is another random encounter but does not give you anything valuable). "Traveling on" after spending the night in the wilderness also counts as "beginning a journey", so you get another 2% chance. However, this is only the case if the game set up camp automatically, not if you manually chose to rest at a roadside inn or anywhere else.

The game's logic for these encounters is somewhat flaky, which is why you will often meet both characters shortly one after another. If your group encounters Olvir, you are also about to meet Kolberg (for every pixel you travel on the map there is now a 50% probability of meeting Kolberg), but only if the random event trigger is not reset! So if nightfall is about to occur or you are about to reach your destination, set up camp manually (remember: this does NOT reset the trigger). On the next morning, choose the option to "turn back" if necessary.

When you finally meet Kolberg, you can buy his map piece for 60 ducats. If you don't have enough money, you can also sell him some of your items to hopefully end up with enough money. You can only meet Kolberg ONCE in the game, so make sure to buy his map piece! If you don't buy the piece, he tells you that you might be able to visit him later at his home in Clanegh. While the game code contains a dialog for this encounter, it never actually made it into the game. You cannot meet Kolberg in Clanegh. He's gone for good after the first encounter.
The Unicorn
There is a unicorn in the game that can give you any map piece. You can meet the unicorn somewhere around the Hermit's lake after you have initiated the main quest in Thorwal.

However, the unicorn will only give you a map piece when you encounter it for the second time. And therein lies the problem, because the second encounter is tied to how much real world time has passed since the first encounter. It does not matter how much time passes in the game! The amount of real world time that needs to pass between encounters is around 4 hours. Changing your system time does not work.

Remember that you don't need to visit the unicorn at all. The 9 map pieces can all be acquired from other characters in the game. But if you are missing pieces, the unicorn is certainly helpful.

If you do encounter the unicorn a second time, it will give you a map piece you're missing, starting at the top left. If you already have this piece, it will instead give you the one top center, and so on. If you already have all 9 pieces, there is obviously no point in visiting the unicorn at all.
