Baldur's Gate 3 - Customization Options

Gender

First off, I should note there are only two genders. Male and female. Changing genders does NOT increase or decrease your stats.

After you select gender, you will want to look at your origin. Origins are apparently the equivalent of pre-made characters with their own unique backgrounds.

Only the custom origin is available right now, however the origins include the Astarion, Lae’zel, Gale, Shadowheart, and Wyll.

Background

Next up is backgrounds. There are currently 13 backgrounds, and each one gives you a different set of proficiencies.  Stealth, Arcana, History, Religion, Medicine, and Perception are just a few of the many proficiencies in BG 3.

In my play-through, I selected the Sage background, but being a criminal, an entertainer, hermit, sailor, or street urchin are just a few of the neat backgrounds you can select from.

Races

In terms of Races – the game has 8 Races, most of which you will be familiar with. Elf, Drow, Human, Dwarf, Half-Elf, and Halfings. The “Tiefling” and “Githyanki” are races that I have not encountered before in the books I read in my younger years.

Another thing you should note is the presence of Cantrips. Different races and classes seem to have access to varying types of Cantrips – something that brings a lot of authenticity to the game. Cantrips are a spell that can be cast at will, without using a spell slot and without being prepared in advance.

Other customizations include voice type, hair and eye color, hair style, skin color, and facial hair.

Classes

In terms of classes, there are currently 6 classes to choose from.

1). Cleric
2). Fighter
3). Ranger
4). Rogue
5). Warlock
6). Wizard

Pretty standard stuff, but some classes get sub classes – like the cleric, for example. The cleric gets “Life domain”, “Light domain”, and “Trickery domain” options.

Also, as a cleric, you get to select your deity. The cleric has over TWENTY dieties you can choose from.

Other classes like the Fighter and Rogue are a little more straightforward, with some pre-set class features however each class has some unique aspects to it.

The Ranger, for example, allows you to select a “Favored enemy”.

Skills

Next up is skill selection – There are many skills, however you can select 2 from a list of skills you have proficiency in.

The final thing I should note is the “Who do you dream of” and what attracts you choice. What the hell does this mean? This is very peculiar, as I am not sure what effect this has on the game. This is to be discovered!

All in all the customization and character customization is incredibly deep and varied and I have no doubt that this game will have enormous replay value.
