How to play Deus Ex: Invisible War flawlessly on Windows 10
By jakeycous
I'm posting below a step-by-step guide to getting this game as close as possible to being 100% playable in Windows 10. After searching for hours I managed to piece together information on various forums to get my version to work, so thought it would be helpful to put it all in one place so everyone can enjoy this brilliant game on PC and not be confined to play it on muddy old Xbox graphics.

Step-by-step
1) Download and install the Steam version.

2) Run the application - it will crash and might even cause your computer to restart - all part of the plan.

3) Next, head over to https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Deus_Ex:_Invisible_War#Essential_improvements and download the Visible Upgrade: Unofficial patch for Deus Ex 2 and install it. It will create 2 desktop icons for you.

4) Then on the same page on PG Gaming Wiki, download dgVoodoo 2 and extract into the file called 'System' in the game files (just right-click on the desktop Icon titled 'Deus Ex with Visible Upgrade' and select 'Open File Location'.

5) Open dgVoodooCpl (you must run as administrator) in the game files and keep all settings as they are. Make sure 'keep window aspect ratio' and 'capture mouse' are ticked, then on the 'DirectX' tab make sure 'dgVoodoo Watermark' is unchecked. Hit OK.

6) Next, right click on the 'Deus Ex with Visible Upgrade' icon and hit 'Properties'. On the compatibility tab, select 'Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 95' and hit apply.

7) Now you're ready to launch the game...but not play it. Double-click on your icon and you should successfully get to the menu screen. Play around with the resolution in the graphics settings on the menu - I'm running mine on 1600x1200 (4:3). Now if you select new game, you should get the start cinematic to play, and then it'll crash on load. The game is completely unplayable still, because every load screen it will just crash. Keep reading for the fix.

8) The fix lies in Task Manager. Follow step by step. First, download a program called 'Process Lasso' https://bitsum.com/. Launch it.

9) Run 'Deus Ex with Visible Upgrade' and get to the menu screen. Then press 'control' + 'shift'+ 'esc' and task manager will launch. Close task manager.

10) Head over to your Process Lasso window and locate the Deus Ex application under the list of processes. It should be called 'DX2Main.exe'. Right-click on it. Select 'CPU Affinity' --> 'Always' --> and check CPU 0 and CPU 1.

11) Close Process Lasso and re-open Deus Ex. Quit the game.

12) Re-launch - and you should be good to go forever! You won't need to repeat every time, it will now always launch with those settings as long as Process Lasso is installed. Your desktop might appear occasionally during loading but only for a second or so before the game returns. Enjoy! Hope this works for everyone.

The only issue I have with this game is the load screens are way too long.

As another comment said, installing the game to the C drive on Windows 10 worked for me. Before that, I couldn't even launch the game without it immediately crashing lol

Thanks for this guide - I appreciate the effort put in, but unfortunately I wasn't able to get it working (Windows 10). I have the retail (boxed) version of the game from back in the day rather than Steam, but from what I read online, the patch is compatible and the same steps should work.

I followed all the steps on the guide, and tried different combinations of various settings too (Process Affinity/Priority, resolution, compatibility modes) - no luck :wasted: If anyone else can share other things that worked for them I'd really appreciate it, but for now I'm off to play Human Revolution!

I was about to say this isnt working for me, but turns out a key feature to getting this game to run is simply having it on your main drive. I installed mine in drive C now and everything runs without any modification. Going to add the first mod to make it look a bit better and have it be in a full resolution. Hope this helps someone.

Put it on your main drive if you havent already, fixed my issue.

I wish someone would make a patch that fixed the controller usage in this game. I just loaded a controller patch onto my computer and it just made my character spin around in circles constantly. It is so frustrating that full controller support does not come with this game. If anybody has any tips, I would appreciate the help.

What worked for me:

1. Ignore Step 6, no compability mode needed.
2. Disable Steam overlay and disable Nvidia GeForce overlay

For better performance, use Nvidia Control Panel and go to program settings: Low latency Mode set to ULTRA, Power management Mode set to MAX performance. I hope that helps! :praisesun:
