Making Prey Work in 2̶0̶2̶0̶ (2024)
By revenantillumes
This is largely a "guide to other guides" in order to get Prey to work on *my* PC playing it in 2̶0̶2̶0̶ (Err...2024 now). I am writing it largely as a reference to myself as to what happened and what steps I took to solve so I don't repeat them in a potential future reinstall/replay. If it is of help to you - great!

Edit 1: (April 2024) Hello dear Reader! I updated the guide title, and some OS details so it's a little more relevant. Btw have y'all heard of this game called Skyrim?

Edit 2: (October 2024): A comment by @PlasmaHound recently referenced the PCGamingWiki article[www.pcgamingwiki.com] on this game for improved methods to accomplish similar tweaks described here without as much hassle. I wrote this guide when PCGW was still not as valuable a tool as it is today. I suggest you also consider reading their article for more up to date/less time consuming alternatives to the tweaks provided here!

Disclaimer:
I'm mostly writing this for my own personal reference, but if it helps you out then I'm glad that a good thing happened. It's super frustrating that we're here in 2020 with a game so highly regarded and so poorly implemented on the PC, but from a survey of various Reddit threads and forums there are a ton of bugs that remain unresolved. These were the ones that caused me the most problems, and if they end up helping you with yours, then that's great!

System In Use At Time of Play:
OS: Windows 10 Home Build: 19045.4291 (Version 22H2)
CPU: Intel Core i5 4690K @ 3.5Ghz (Stock - Summertime Temps)
RAM: 16GB DDR3 @ 666Mhz
Mobo: MSI Z87I GAMING AC
GFX: MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G VRAM
Driver: GeForce Game Ready Driver Version 546.33

Still a fairly humble system for 2020, and getting close to being replaced with an RTX 3000 series and accompanying subsystem upgrades (lol it is 2024 and this has not happened jfc 😭), but just fine for playing Prey in 1080p.
Blurry Texture Resolution on "Very High" Graphics Settings

"Pop in/Blurry Textures Fix [Very High]"

Addresses a strange issue where textures/models appear "blurry" or low resolution despite having the "very high" resolution setting chosen in options. It's unclear as to what causes this, some are attributing it to CryEngine, though apparently the DLC uses Unreal Engine 4 so there may have been issues related to that which simply never got patched.

Guide Contents (Relevant portions reprinted in case of deletion/removal):

In-Game Settings
1. Start Prey and set texture resolution to "Very High". Apply and quit game.

Windows Settings
1. Go to C:\Users*your user*\Saved Games\Arkane Studios\Prey and open "game.cfg".

2. Add these lines at the end with your text editor of choice:
r_DetailDistance = 16
r_EnvTexResolution = 4
r_DetailTextures = 1
sys_spec_textureresolution = 4

3. Save file.
4. Right click file, click properties, and select "Read-Only". Apply and save.

It is important to do this as Prey overwrites any changes made upon start-up. Making it read-only preserves any settings you make.
Remove Motion Blur

"Motion Blur really?!"

Removes motion blur feature which is carried over from console. Improves visuals and general mouse movement immensely and is highly recommended for a less blurry and dizzying experience.

Windows Settings
1. Go to C:\Users*your user*\Saved Games\Arkane Studios\Prey and open "game.cfg".

2. Add these lines at the end with your text editor of choice:
r_MotionBlur = 0

3. Save file.
4. Right click file, click properties, and select "Read-Only". Apply and save.

It is important to do this as Prey overwrites any changes made upon start-up. Making it read-only preserves any settings you make.
Disable Intro Movies
Guide To Follow:
Edit as of September 10, 2024:
From the generous comment of @madeingermany below:

1. In the Steam Interface go to game title and right click.
2. Select "Properties".
3. Under "General", locate "Launch Option" and enter: "-skipArkIntro"
4. Start the game.

For the Moon Crash DLC enter: "-skipArkIntro" "-loadFrom=Whiplash" "-dlc=865670"

Removes unskippable and lengthy introduction/title videos.

Windows Settings
1. Go to ...\steamapps\common\Prey\GameSDK\Videos.

2. Edit the extensions of the following files from .bk2 to .bak. Be careful there are mild spoilers in the video titles.

  • Ryzen_Bumper.bk2
  • ArkaneLogoAnim_Redux_1080p2997_ST-16LUFS.bk2
  • Bethesda_logo_anim_white.bk2
  • LegalScreens.bk2
The game will load directly to the main screen.

I read it as making prey woke in 2025 and made myself chuckle a lot for no reason. Good guide though

Did anyone test forcing Resizable BAR in this game? Any fps gains, instability or stutter?

For some reason, Im having issues when Im changing my cfg with blurry texture removal commands, In game, in some randomly chosen places the game just lags a lot, feels like its slowing down for a bit and fps also drops. So be careful to use it, and if you have experienced some lags in random but same spots, it's defenitely it, so you should remove this commands from cfg. In some points, it can be really frustruating, especially when enemies are close, so removal blurry textures for the price of the game stability is not really worth it. But maybe only I have experienced such a trouble, I dont really know, but removal commands sovled it for me. Anyway, good guide, especially skipping inrto movies :cozybethesda:

Anybody playing on a high refresh-rate monitor can also set the max engine fps to something like 240, that way you can actually take advantage of your monitor. By default it will only go to 144 Hz, even if the fps counter tells you 240.

Having the same issue as MackerelMafia now. I played about 6 months ago and had no issues. Reinstalled today and now the lighting is messed up. It's dark everywhere, except light sources, and there's random visual glitches that show outside the station for a split second.

Tried reinstalling, changing up graphics settings, etc..

Hi! I'm having a completely different issue where, upon loading into the game, all the lighting is completely broken? Unless it gives off light, I just can't see it. (Taking the starting room as an example, everything is pitch-black except for the window, the television, the workplace computer screen, and the shine on grabbable items.) Is there any way to fix this? I picked up this game for the Seam Winter Sale and would love to actually be able to play it. Thanks!

@revenantillumes Thanks! That solved my issue. Exited for my first playthrough :earthplatypus:

@Carlos Heinz:

Please take a look at the PCGamingWiki Article (https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Prey_(2017)#Post-processing) as provided by @PlasmaHound - you may find some helpful tips to make motion blur a little more manageable!
revenantillumes  [author] 25 Oct, 2024 @ 6:03pm
@PlasmaHound: There really isn't a reason to not create an autoexec.cfg file! When I assembled this, I was pulling from various forums/subreddits for different tweaks to specific things irking me. At that time PCGamingWiki wasn't quite as robust as it is now, so there are definitely more improved methods of doing things!

I've added a disclaimer at the top to point people towards the PCGamingWiki article so they can review it first to perhaps save them some hassle! Thank you for sharing!
