By some unknown reason, the 64-bit darkest dungeon will crash on certain mods, if not launching the game through steam library, but by directly clicking the exe.
It has been confirmed this crash is caused by the lacking of command line -skipvalidation, as Red Hook will automatically add this command line when launching from steam library.
And in some players environment, by some other unknown reason, the command line is lost even when they do have launched the exe from steam library, when they are using the unofficial exe fix patch.
Thus, please manually add this command line into steam launch parameter to ensure it can function correctly.
Further tests show that the lacking of command line "-skipvalidation" is the reason why online darkest.exe will crash on loading when enabled “bonewheel” mod.
If you insist launching the game by directly clicking "_windows\win64\darkest.exe", you must firstly create a shortcut for the exe, then right click this shortcut's property, type "-skipvalidation" on the end of the target section, and use this shortcut to launch the game. By doing so, the crash will not happen.
Thus, this crash is NOT caused by the unofficial patch, and possibly not caused by code bug from those mods too, but caused by the way how steam launch Darkest Dungeon.
I shall keep searching the true reason of this weird crash. As for you and for now, you may still keep using this unofficial patch to benefit from its fixes, but please pay attention that you must launch the game from steam library, while never from directly clicking the "Darkest.exe".
I have confirmed this crash does exist when playing certain mods (such as “bonewheel” you mentioned before).
From my tests, this crash will only be triggered when launch the game from directly clicking the "Darkest.exe" main program under the path "_windows\win64\". If you launch the game formally from the steam library, this crash will not happen.
What is more, even the official vanilla "Darkest.exe" will trigger this crash, if it is directly clicked. And for the unofficial patch, this crash will not happen if you launch the game formally from the steam library.
I’ll check date for sure.
OK, I shall check this two mods later.
When do they crash? Are they just crash on loading the save?
Besides, please check the "program modify date" of your darkest.exe in "_windows\win64\", it should be 2025-07-05 17:56:28. Sometimes the exe will be rolled back when Steam update or Redhook update.
#1: i used to play on your file “unoffical exe dd1” by send it to desktop and play it normaly. I used stream and play it normally with stream launcher ( i used to played your unofficial exe directly before i got crash).
#2 i got delete cmd “monster disable” but still got crash, i’ll check again soon.
I not play in testing branch for sure, i was get a pop up in game stream launcher by play in 64 bit version and that all. I play on 64 bit version and at this time i can play normaly with new mod (400- 500 mod for sure and go smootly).
