Description

Things a progressing nicely in the La-Mulana One Finger, No Hit challenge. Viy is a boss that would be agonizingly tedious if not for an obvious weak spot during his first attack. Thankfully we exploit it to skip the entire first phase. Viy has 100HP on Hard Mode requiring 15 swings with a software boosted axe across 2 phases.

By standing right next to the eye during it’s first extension, we can get between 8 and 11 free hits with the axe to skip phase one entirely. This does take a bit of luck, but it’s right at the start of the fight, so it’s nothing crushing. Failing this trick is especially bad as phase 1 is the most tedious part of the fight. Viy’s large laser will fire straight up breaking all the platforms we could use to get easy hits, which greatly extends the length of the phase and puts us at the mercy of the tentacles when we do attack.

Phase 2 is much less tedious. Viy will curve the laser towards you, which will allow some platforms to survive near the middle. Viy will also chain attacks together which can give varying (and usually better) platform heights when he does extend his eye. It’s also more likely that eye extensions will be done back to back, which gives you more platforms to work with. Don’t be fooled though, Viy has no shortage of ways to hit you and runs are easily lost to bad tentacle patterns or unlucky fire geyser sprays. Viy sat dead center for number of attempts placing 5th of 9. Next up in the La-Mulana One Finger, No Hit challenge is Palenque, a boss that was clearly never designed to be done without taking damage.
