How to Play Nidhogg
By Pablo the Ping-guin
I tried using the in game tutorial, but I encountered a bug where it would close after a few seconds. If you are also encountering this bug, or just want to know how the game works, this guide is for you.

(Please note that this guide is made only from my own breif observations. If you know more about how the game works, then please leave a comment. Thank you!)

Movement, Attacking, and Defending.

Movement
To move left or right, press the left and right arrows on your keyboard (WASD also works in single player). Holding a movement key will make your character run, while tapping it will make them take a short step. Pressing G by default will make your character jump. If you do not have a sword equipped, standing over one and pressing down will pick one up. If you press down while running, you will roll. Tap down while running, and you will do a cartwheel. Cartwheeling and rolling can also be used to pick up swords.

Attacking
When holding your sword, there are three positiongs you can hold it in: High, Middle, and Low. You can move your sword higher or lower by pressing up and down on your keyboard. To attack from any of these positions, press F. You can also throw your sword by pressing up until your charater is holding their sword in a throwing position, and then pressing attack. You can perform a dive kick by jumping in the air and attacking, and a low kick by rolling and attacking, or ducking and attacking.

When you are without a weapon, you can only perform an unarmed attack from one height (standing), and it does not kill in one hit. If you land enough unarmed attacks of any type (1 dive kick, 1 low kick, or 2+ punches), the enemy will fall to the ground stunned, at which point you can finish them off by pressing attack.

Defending
If you attack an opponent and they are holding their sword in the same position as you, they will block it. For example, if you make a low attack against an opponent who is holding their sword low, your attack will be stopped. The three positions also defend against dive kicks, low kicks, and thrown swords:

-Thrown swords are blocked by the High and Middle positions
-Dive kicks and regular jumps are blocked by the High and Middle positions.
-Rolling is blocked by the Low position
NOTE: Blocking a dive kick or roll will kill the attacker. So just like in real life, don't jump into swords.

Another defensive move is disarming your opponent, which knocks their sword out of their hands. You can do this by moving your sword into their attack. As an example:

-Your opponent attacks high, your sword is in the middle.
-If you move your sword to the high position before your opponent hits you, this will disarm them.
How to Win
To win, you must move past your opponent's end of the screen until you are eaten by a giant flying horned worm.

No, really.

Everyone will die someday thats why the winner gets eaten. There are no winners in life.
Only agony joy and death.

@Kuranes Its symbolising this: Warriors fighting(fencing in this case) pointlesly slaughtering other warriors. Finally on their moment of glory and victory they are consumed by Nidhogg(*) to pay for their sins(Slaughtering other people, oath breaking, etc.)

(*) Direct quotation from wikipedia:
"In Norse mythology, Níðhöggr (Malice Striker, often anglicized Nidhogg[1]) is a dragon who gnaws at a root of the World Tree, Yggdrasill. In historical Germanic society, níð was a term for a social stigma implying the loss of honour and the status of a villain. Thus, its name might refer to its role as a horrific monster or in its action of chewing the corpses of the inhabitants of Náströnd: those guilty of murder, adultery, and oath-breaking (which the Norsemen considered among the worst possible crimes)."

They are eaten by Nidhug because they are worthy of it, as they are the best of warriors. It's like an honor. (Norse Mythology FTW!) - I'm out.

The worm is most persumably Nidhug, from whom the game is named. Nidhug rests in the underworld, gnawing and suckling at the roots of Yggdrasil, the tree of life, as well as sucking the blood out of the warriors unworthy of Asgård. Why the winner is the one eaten then makes little sense...

I thought the tutorial was intentional, and that the dev had a sense of humor

Good catch, yeah just attack is probably right.

@tristenkw5 Thanks! I'll be sure to add it in. Although I've been able to do the ground finisher without pressing down, so I think it's just press attack.
