How to make Fallout VR actually playable with the Index controllers
Av Lord Cookie Lord (Rockster_dev)
As some of you might know playing Fallout VR on the Index with the Index controllers is horrendous and near to unplayable!

Luckily there is a fix for it with a mod that pretty much emulates Oculus touch controllers making the game actually playable with the Index controllers (For as far as those work though)

The mod to make it all work properly!
So there is this little mod on Github (https://github.com/fholger/f4ovr_improvements/releases/tag/cas_v2 (the 7z provided in the git contains the mirrored dll can be checked via checksum) mirror link https://rockster.dev/openvr can be unzipped using winrar or 7zip) for Oculus touch emulation for Index/Cosmos it's very simple to install!

So what you wanna do is download the file from Github (it should be a .DLL file called openVR_api.dll) and put that into
{Your steam folder}\steamapps\common\Fallout 4 VR

A alternative way to get to your install folder for a game is within your library right click on the game then click Properties, then you click on Local Files -> Browse...

And just drag the .DLL file into the folder, now all you need to do is customize the control settings so you are actually using the proper control scheme!

Changing the controller settings in SteamVR
This can be done in the controller settings within SteamVR which can be done by browsing to the game within SteamVR

So after putting the .DLL in the FalloutVR folder Open up SteamVR and open the game, Then press the steam button to open the SteamVR menu then click Controller Bindings

Then a menu should pop open click Custom under Active controller binding.

Then click edit this binding. This should open another menu where you can see the controllers just click back on the top left then select under community bindings "Index as Touch W/ Custom OpenVR.dll" press activate on this and you should be ready to finally be able to enjoy Fallout VR

Disclaimer/Changelog
Disclaimer:
I don't know if this mod fixes some of the issues I have seen floating around with the Reverb G2 please do tell me if you had success with this mod for the G2 then I can update the guide to include a step for the Reverb G2!

Update to the Disclaimer:
So apparently it works "well" for the G2. There are still some issues with it as I personally don't have a G2 I am unable to create proper keybindings for it please if you figure it all out tell me and I will add it to the guide!

Update 2:
According to someone in the comments the G2 should work fine (Kinda?). Also according to a comment that got left the Cosmos works fine without modding so I removed the mentions of it.

Update 3:
This will be the last update for this guide as the creator has Archived the mod files if you need them the link is still valid and the files can be found there. Some people may still prefer this mod over the default layout of the index controllers in the controller bindings (I don't fully know if they are the same or if they are different?). Else follow "Changing the controller settings in SteamVR" and select "Emulate Oculus touch controllers" as your binding this should give you the same effect.

Update 4:
Changed the link from nexus mods -> github as it apparently isn't available on Nexusmods anymore! also added a mirrorlink that I host myself it's untampered (virus total https://imgur.com/JLsJB1p)
The end
Thanks for reading this guide on how to make the game actually playable!
And if you have any questions just put them down in the comment section and I will try to help you out with your issue :)

A big shoutout to the creator of this mod for making this game playable on the newer headsets!

If you liked this guide consider giving it some awards and making it a favorite of yours!

My knowledge about the pimax isn't that great and I assuming you are using the standard controllers you should be able to use this mod to fix it I think.

I can't speak with confidence about it due to me not owning a pimax 😅

I know I am being lazy, but how do I play this game ideally on the pimax crystal light, I have looked several times, and the controls are just obviously not working correctly with the pimax controllers - I am not really into the mod scene, but willing to undertake some config to play it in VR - anyone?

Using winrar or 7zip these changes are already reflected in the guide!

how do i do that?

That might have to do with the Mark of the web tag windows has included and tends to block for now the simple fix I applied is making it a .7z compressed file you can just uncompress it into the fallout VR folder, it just goes into the fallout 4 VR folder itself.

im using a valve headset and im trying to download the api, as much of a struggle as that was since it was marked unsafe. but everytime i try to use it or move it it has an error message saying it doesnt have an app to use it. im not sure if i just throw that in the falloutvr files or something???

I updated the guide with a new link to the openVR_API.dll and I included a mirror link that I personally host myself incase the repo disappears thanks for letting me know!

I also changed the layout of the guide a bit to make it more clear where the Disclaimer and changelog are

That mod is definitely not available anymore, you can see it described in the archive section but there is no file to download, bit of a shame I'll have to stick with the unusable version
