Was as spherical as you could get in the pre-alpha first release of Space Engineers, 7 years ago.

Neither. I'm pretty sure this pre-dated the ability to save ships since this was done on the very first pre-release of Space Engineers over 6 years ago.
This was as spherical as the game would allow back then. There weren't planets, wheels or even pistons. Guns didn't work and drills didn't auto-collect.
In either case, if I did save it. It was on my old PC, which is now scrap.
