"The term "Tribali" is often encountered in the works of Vizantian and other European authors of the Middle Ages, which exclusively referred to Serbs. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] Some of these authors quite clearly indicate that "tribal" is synonymous with "Serbian" [6][7][8][9][10] Nikita Honijat (1155-1215) in its history of the reign of Emperor Jovan Komnin states the following: "... Shortly thereafter, he led a crusade against the Tribal people (which can also be called Serbs) ..." [11] Much later, Dimitrios Halkokondilis (1423–1511), writing about the Christian nobleman who received Islam, says: "... This Mahmud, the son of Michael, is Tribal, which means Serb, after his mother and Greek after his father."[12] And Mehmed I the Conqueror mentions Tribali in his descriptions of the plundering of Serbia."
