Things to do
  • In Vendetta, give away your position while waiting for General Amsel to show up.
Fire your weapons while waiting for Amsel. If Reznov says above, you're good.

  • In Their Land, Their Blood, do not kill any of the dying germans at the start of the level.
Do not kill either of these germans. Ignore them and move along.

  • In Eviction, mercy-kill the germans who are trying to surrender at the metro gate.
Any attack besides throwing molotov at them will do. If Reznov says above, you're good.

If you follow these, Chernov will praise you as an indeed hero in his diary.

Any other actions you do in Soviet campaign, such as using molotov at random germans, killing any retreating germans, using flamethrower on the tank - don't matter. These three actions are the only factors that determines your action of mercy or brutality in Chernov's Diary.

I give my thanks to one of my Steam friends, Doktoberfest for solving this mystery. Credit goes to him.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Chernov was my favorite guy besides Per (The Honor Guard you meet at the upper Reichstag level)

“When he first spoke of Dimitri, Reznov told tales of a hero. Someone we should all aspire to be like.” most likely refers to Reznov
witnessing Dimitri’s actions and speaking about them to the Red Army. So yeah, Reznov is the only witness of the choice in Vendetta.

It's likely a bug.

The one from Vendetta is weird, considering Chernov isn't there to see it.

It's still strange that he'd describe that choice as "complete brutality" (lol), not to mention that the only account of it he'd have heard would've been from Reznov, who is far from being an unbiased source (this is a bit of a conjecture, but I don't believe he would have talked about it with Dmitri himself, as the two never seemed that close), but no one cares about Chernov anyway, so...

The most possible explanation for Vendetta's choice is because of how giving away your position is used a distraction for your comrades to retreat. As Reznov thinks not giving away your position and letting them die is a necessary sacrifice, Chernov sees this as an immoral action.

Because Dimitri covered for them, or at least tried to, Chernov will think highly of him.

Thanks so much. I wish I saw your reply 4 hours ago when you posted it. Ah well, I managed to get some achievements along the way and had fun playing it on a much calmer difficulty than Veteran.

Can you do this by skipping through and doing mission select or do we have to start from Vendetta and play all the way through?
