Study the BladeDo a spin attack with the Damascus Katana

Thunderous SteelDo a lightning attack with the Tungsten Sword

You know how you can stick your sword out by holding down the attack button? Doing that with the Damascus Katana or the Tungsten Sword charges up a special move instead. Charge, release, and there’s the achievement. The Katana and the Sword can both be obtained from the Blacksmith, costing 10 Meteors each.

BuzzsoreKill a Whirligig

Whirligigs are the spinning blades of death that can be found in a lot of dungeons. As far as I can tell, the only way to defeat them is by shooting them with a Silver Bow (purchasable for 10 meteors at the blacksmith).

Dream WarriorMaster the Hallucination Tunic

After completing the Hallucinatory Battle Arena (see Mystery Item IV), you’ll receive the Hallucination tunic, which lets you fight the Arena anywhere. The catch is that there’s some extra enemy waves, featuring the same enemies with special effects. The first ‘round’ of enemies is otherwise identical, although defeating all the Pyromelons nets you a random item (heart piece, meteor, tunic, etc.). The second ‘round’ ends a bit sooner, only going up to those explosive crabs, and similarly nets you another random reward, plus the achievement. The number of enemies per wave just keeps increasing more and more; at some point the strategy is less “try not to die” and more “try not to get in the way of the enemies as they wipe each other out”. Bring as many Health potions as you can afford, plus the Katana to help you clear a path through the enemies that come your way, and you shouldn’t have too much trouble.

Unequipping the Hallucination tunic at any point cancels the event, so any buffs need to be made up with potions. You can repeat the Battle Arena at any time, even after getting Dream Warrior, and you’ll get items with every completion.
Bosses
No Other WayKill a boss for the first time

Any of the eight archangels will do, just keep stabbing 'em until they explode. Nothing much more to it. Note that killing any boss prevents you from getting the Perfect ending.

Another WayDefeat a boss without killing it

Surprise, the above achievement was a lie! This can only be done after obtaining the item from and exiting dungeon 4 (The Guild LLC), at which point the prince will send you the Power of Compassion. Keep in mind, there's nothing at all stopping you from skipping the boss battles against the archangels; all you need is the item in their dungeon, and you're free to leave. In fact, you'll need to skip all of them for another achievement, but that'll be saved for later.

Unlike the other Powers, the Power of Compassion is an equippable item, though it can only be used during the boss battles. Before it'll actually work, however, you'll need the eight Mystery Items (see the eight achievements below for details). Each Mystery Item can be given to one of the bosses, although the specific item is randomized between seeds. You can tell who gets what based on what's on the students' desks at the beginning of the game.

The specifics of using the Power of Compassion varies from boss to boss, but in general, it'll be usable once the boss is one hit away from death and/or in a vulnerable state. When the Power can be used, it'll start floating around in your inventory (assuming it's equipped). For example with the first boss, Azraflail, the Power can be used after he resorts to picking up his flail and throws it; once he raises his hands, it's time to compassion him. For bosses with a glitched second form, you'll have to go through both forms before you can compassion them. If you're not sure if the boss is vulnerable enough, let them go through their attack cycle; if the Power isn't doing anything, try whacking them and seeing if they're vulnerable now. This strategy can also result in you accidentally killing them, so keep a save handy.

The Man Who Sold The WorldDefeat the Chairman without killing him

Sympathy for the DelvinDefeat Delvin without killing him

Just as with the other archangels, defeating them without killing them involves using the Power of Compassion when they're almost dead. This time, no other item's required. The Chairman can be compassioned after he sends out three bulls on each column and the subsequent tennis match. For Delvin, there isn’t a specific moment; when he's fully glitched into his one-winged angel mode, the Power of Compassion will eventually start floating around (this may or may not involve wailing on him just a bit more).

H̨͔͇͈̹̼̘͇e̼͕̜͔͎̘ŗ̮̳̺̗̰̝o̗̹ḭ̯̻c͕̥͓̰̰ F̮͡ͅo͈̘̭̯̗r̪̘̰͈t̳͡i̹͚̯̺̥͟t̜̤͙̞̜͕̦u̧̻͔̬̯̠d̦̺̹̺͍̪̟͡e̤͓̳͖͢Save Lance

Ś͕͚̰͙͇a̗̤̻̣ͅg̳͎̮ͅe̟͙̝̟̮ ͖̼W̫̥̭̦̻i̡̳͚̖̠ͅs̩d͚̙̝o̰m̨̻͙̗Save the Elder

While you’re on the path to the “Perfect” ending (see I Am Doing This Right), you’ll also have unique boss battles against Lance and the Elder. As with every other boss, you can either kill them or ‘save’ them with the Power of Compassion. Much like every other boss as well, compassioning them involves poking at them with your various weapons until the Power starts floating around. For these battles more than any other, keep the Power of Compassion equipped on you at all times; their attack patterns are chaotic, and openings are not obvious at all.

Companions
Ashes to AshesEmpower Henrietta

While wandering across the world, you’ll almost certainly stumble onto the Phoenix Ash, a unique item that can appear anywhere from caves to random bushes to drops from the sky. Regardless of where you find it, you can give it to Henrietta (the chicken companion) and upgrade her to MeggaHenrietta, making her an offensive glass cannon that’s always on fire and always charges after every enemy.

Never Gooing BackBring powered-up Henrietta to the fight with Delvin

After giving Henrietta some Phoenix Ash (and netting yourself the Ashes to Ashes achievement in the process), just bring her to the final boss battle. Genuinely isn’t more complicated than that. What’s special is that, unlike every other companion and every other boss battle, only MeggaHenrietta will fight the boss alongside you rather than run away.

Ghouls Just Wanna Have FunUnlock Shadow Lenna

Two Can Play At That GamePlay local co-op with a friend

After getting the Power of Fortitude from Lance's corpse, head to the Shadow Temple, pop the Power in the slot, and that's one achievement down. After that, player two can join from the main menu, as long as you have a second controller. Player one can use the keyboard, player two can use a gamepad, and both players can be you.

Don't Judge a BookUnlock Paige as a companion

When you first meet Paige at the library, she asks you to find her missing library books. This conversation is necessary for them to spawn throughout the world in the first place. They appear basically wherever you could find any random item, random caves and bushes included, but they can also be obtained from bookcases. Once you’ve got at least 8 of them, head back to the library, talk to Paige, and she’ll offer to join you so she can help find the rest of her books. Companion get, achievement get.
Mystery Items
Mystery Item IGet the Binoculars

The Binoculars are the final reward for the long trade quest, involving many of the random NPCs across the map. It first requires a "Runny Blue Potion", which is always the hidden name of the Water Potion. In all of my seeds, the Travelling Merchant has always had it for sale. After that, it's a matter of trading items along until you're rewarded. In short, Water Potion --> Thirsty Person --> lady in An Office --> "Creepy Jack" --> briefcase-carrying skeleton (always inside The Guild LLC, dungeon 4) --> Travelling Merchant --> Naked Bear --> Zoologist --> congrats!

Mystery Item IIGet the Book of Changes

Getting the Book of Changes involves chasing the Travelling Merchant around until he coughs it up. As with other NPCs, the merchant's location is random, though at least his first reappearance is restricted to the right side of the map. Once you find him and buy something, he'll leave, and you'll then be pointed to another area of the map. Rinse and repeat three more times, and after the fourth purchase, he'll give you the book.

Mystery Item IIIGet the IOU

The IOU is obtained at The Guild LLC’s stock market, on the second floor. You need to have enough stocks that total to $1000 in value, sell them, then try to withdraw everything with the skeleton at the counter. They say sorry, give you the IOU, and there’s your achievement. Now, getting that $1000 almost goes hand-in-hand with Leverage: if you have $500, deposit it all into your funds, dump it all into the PALC stock, then keep pulling that lever until it goes up. At the beginning, PALC stocks are only worth $1, and pulling the lever can never make it go into negatives, so it’s only a matter of time until it goes up and you can make an easy profit. Even with less than $500 in funds, PALC is surprisingly resilient until it reaches about $6 per stock. For extra cheese, you can save scum until the slots are in your favour.
If you want to actually cash out your earnings, you’ll need to buy at least one GILD stock.

Mystery Item IVGet the Beta Cup

The Beta Cup is obtained as a reward for completing the Hallucinatory Battle Arena. Talk to the dungeonmaster in front of the Strange Cave, enter the cave, and get ready to battle against nine waves of enemies. Each wave uses a different enemy and increases the number of enemies. Since this is just the beta, there isn’t too much to worry about save for the last wave with the Pyromelons, just because of the sheer bullet hell you’ll have to deal with. Conveniently, they can also damage each other, so as long as you bring some Health potions you’ll be golden.
Equipping the Hallucination tunic puts you on the path to Dream Warrior.

Mystery Item VGet the Patent

The hunt for the Patent is much in the spirit of Mystery Item I, except with less trading. It starts with finding and entering the Status Effects Store. The duo inside ask you to find their sister, Tressa, thus beginning a series of point-A-to-point-B quests much like the Binoculars. In short:
1. Talk to the dungeonmaster in front of the Strange Cave
2. Call Tressa (555-3956)
3. Talk to Paige (you can talk to her even if she’s your companion)
4. Talk to the lady at the entrance to Guild LLC
5. Answer her ‘security’ questions (the answers are Potter, Tunley)
6. Call Tressa’s mom (555-1105)
7. Enter dungeon 4
8. Get the patent (congrats!)
Note that the phone numbers will only work once you’ve reached that stage of the quest.

Mystery Item VIGet the Error Log

While exploring the eastern side of the kingdom, you’ll come across a Woodcutter who gives you his Woodcutter’s Axe. This allows you to chop down trees and bushes, but more importantly can let you discover secret areas. At the edge of every screen of the map, if you see a green bush, that’s your cue to chop it down and reveal the secret. The first time you do this, the Woodcutter is so ecstatic that he gives you the Error Log as a reward.
These secret areas can also appear on the western side, but since green bushes are the norm there, they’re a lot harder to find. The graveyard also uses dead bushes rather than green bushes to mark its secret areas.

Mystery Item VIIGet the Police Report

In the 3 Bears’ Cottage, generally found on the western side of the map, you’ll find a guard who asks you for help in catching a criminal—namely, someone who sneaks into houses and sleeps in their beds (the horror). Agreeing to help begins a minigame of sorts, where someone is sneaking around the house and you have to make sure you aren’t spotted. If they see you, they run away, but you can reset them just by exiting and re-entering the room. For your part, all you have to do is hide behind the furniture. The height of the furniture doesn’t matter, a knee-high cardboard box hides you just as well as everything. Once the sneaker hops on the bed, they’re escorted away, netting you the Police Report and the achievement.
Also, Camouflage doesn’t work.

Mystery Item VIIIEarn Paige's affections

After getting Don't Judge a Book, you’re already halfway there. Once you’ve obtained 12 books, Paige offers to make you a treat with Marshmallows (the pink slimes), which requires a bit of enemy grinding on your part. The easiest way is to destroy a bunch of ice; they have a decent chance of spawning a random enemy when destroyed, Marshmallows included. Once you’ve collected them all, you’re rewarded with a cute little cutscene between Lenna and Paige, and the achievement.
Exploration
Tomb RaidingFind a tomb under a gravestone

In the graveyard, if you push a gravestone down (from the north to the south), sometimes it’ll budge. Either an angry skeleton appears, or a cave appears. There aren’t any indications as to what’s what, all you can do is push every grave you see and live out your dream of playing Graveyard Keeper.

No Stone UnturnedUncover the whole overworld map

This one’s self-explanatory: don’t worry about uncovering every cave or every secret room in the dungeons, just make sure that none of the tiles of the overworld map are darkened. Visit each tile once and you’re golden.

Yo DawgFind a cave within a cave

There isn’t anything on the outside that indicates whether a cave will have another cave within it, it’s just something that you’ll stumble onto randomly. The caves themselves won’t be hidden either; the only truly hidden cave is the one found in Tomb Raiding. Otherwise, comb every tile of every map, even within the dungeons, and you’ll find an inner cave eventually.

LeverageDouble your money in a single trade at the bank

Going for Mystery Item III will almost definitely net you this achievement as well; head to the stock market on The Guild LLC’s second floor, dump any amount of money into PALC, then keep pulling that lever. As mentioned above, the stocks can never go into negatives, so no matter what happens, you’re guaranteed to eventually make a profit. Since PALC is only worth $1, any increase means that your stocks are increased 1:1.

Lance-A-LotConfuse an NPC by naming yourself Lance

Pretty self-explanatory: at the start of the game, change your name to "Lance" instead of "Lenna". There's a few script changes and gags throughout the game, but you'll get the achievement during the encounter with the Chairman on the bridge.
Game Breaks
Magical Mystery TorusCross the world wrap

This requires the Spring Boots, which you can obtain from secret rooms. Once you’ve got them equipped, head to any edge of the map, find a spot where you’re free to jump to the ocean, and double-jump your way to the other side of the map.

Sequence Break IAccess a dungeon without defeating the boss in the dungeon before it

There’s nothing in the game that forces you to finish dungeon 2 immediately after finishing dungeon 1. If the path happens to be blocked by a unique item, then grab it from whichever dungeon that has it and get the heck out. The achievement’s only concerned about the boss of the dungeon, and nothing else, so you’re free to sprint to the final boss without even seeing any of the archangels. This is required for Right, I Am Doing This.

Sequence Break IIBlow up a rock before you obtain the bombs

There are many enemies that use explosions to attack, particularly in the late-game where some enemies get random special effects applied to them. There’s also the aptly named Bombshell, which blows up if you attack it while it’s hiding in its shell. If you happen get hit with an explosive attack while you’re next to a rock, that’s good enough for the achievement. Otherwise, the trusty Explosion potion or tunic will do the job.

Sequence Break IIIMelt ice before you obtain the lighter

The only way to melt ice is with fire. Thankfully, lighters aren’t the only way to get fire. The most obvious way is with the Fire potion (you need to throw it onto yourself for it to work) or tunic, but getting either requires some luck. The easiest way is likely through MeggaHenrietta (see Ashes to Ashes), as she’ll instantly melt ice if she bumps into it. It’s a bit finicky to force it, but walk next enough ice patches and it’ll eventually happen. Finally, as a hail mary, there’s Hallucination, which will spawn Pyromelons (the lizard wizards that shoot fire). It also summons a bunch of other enemies, so file that away as a last resort.

Sequence Break IVUse a potion to skip Lance's death cutscene

This one might require a bit more luck than usual, unfortunately. The achievement’s description is a bit misleading, namely because there are two ways to obtain it: either make it to the first boss without Lance, or skip dungeon 1 completely and enter into some other dungeon. Both the first dungeon and the starting are surrounded by bushes that must be chopped down with Lance’s sword or other obstacles that require items from later dungeons. Thankfully, several potions (and their corresponding tunics) can help you escape.
Sequence Break II and Sequence Break III have been preparing you for this moment: the techniques described above can be reused once again to get rid of any rocks or ice in your way. If you’re dealing with standard bushes, fire and explosions can directly destroy them, provided you’re stood next to them. The only new tool you could bring out now is Hover, which will let you float over any large gaps or bodies of water. If you’re really lucky, your seed might let you enter the room before the boss in dungeon 1; it’ll be blocked by bushes, but you can just warp directly to the boss door from the map (credit goes to ICountFrom0 for this method).
If you want to throw away luck, the seed for this last method’s Aquica. My run used the Phoenix Ash, seed Wefieleffell, or if you want to go for Fire Potions, the seed’s Iustaphae. Honestly, this achievement requires a bit too much luck otherwise, so feel free to use any of these.
Other Items
Hops and DreamsDrop a beer potion on yourself

Fear and LoathingDrop a hallucination potion on yourself

I’m lumping these two together since the process for getting them is identical: find potion, use potion. Potion colors are randomized on a seed-to-seed basis, and potion locations are randomized on a playthrough-to-playthrough basis. I believe that Hallucination is guaranteed to be sold at the Status Effect Store (see Mystery Item V to learn how to set it up), whereas Beer is more of an explore-the-world-and-hope-for-the-best kinda deal.

Heart-to-HeartMax out your heart meter

You won’t be getting this achievement on a pacifist run.
Besides defeating every boss, the remaining heart pieces are found scattered across the world, in secret areas and caves and shops and all the standard places that random unique items can appear. The item drops that may catch you are the rewards from the Hallucinatory Battle Arena (see Dream Warrior) and the secret area in the library, but there’s no guarantee you’ll get heart pieces here. Also, the Arena can be repeated for multiple rewards; if you want to speed that along, you can start multiple runs of the Arena simultaneously (equip Hallucination tunic, exit menu, enter menu, equip some other tunic, exit + enter, equip Hallucination, repeat until game lags itself to death).
The final boss’s heart may also count towards this, but to be honest I’m uncertain.

One With EverythingGet one of every item

This requires you to be in possession of every key item, every equipment, every memory, all 22 tunics, all 21 potions, and all 16 books. You’re likely going to get pretty close to completing this in the process of getting every other achievement, but you’ll still have a few stragglers. Get ready for lists!

Any other item not listed here isn't necessary for the achievement; a Sacrifice run (Am I Doing This Right?) should be able to obtain all items.
Endings
Am I Doing This Right?Get the "Sacrifice" ending

This is roughly the ‘traditional’ ending of the game, or what you’d see if you followed the basic path of killing all eight archangels before heading to the final boss. There isn’t much more to this besides listening to what the game bluntly tells you to do. Once you land the finishing blow on Delvin, make sure to blow out the dust, otherwise you won’t get the ending (and therefore the achievement).

Right, I Am Doing ThisGet the "Catastrophe" ending

As mentioned for Sequence Break I, it’s possible to skip the archangels entirely and move on to whatever dungeon’s next. This achievement requires skipping all eight archangels and beelining to Delvin. With that said, you’ll still need some of the unique items from the dungeons, particularly dungeon 8’s Missinglasses, and it really wouldn’t hurt to hunt for caves and secret areas that might give you heart pieces. After all, killing the boss is what gives you full hearts. After defeating Delvin, the game doesn’t even present you with a choice. Watch the cutscene, and that’s how this part of the story ends.

I Am Doing This RightGet the "Perfect" ending

Remember Another Way? As you may have already guessed, this achievement requires using the Power of Compassion on all eight archangels (the Chairman and Dervin are optional, but it doesn’t hurt to go for a pacifist run). All the advice I mentioned previously applies again here, except you’re also doing it with much fewer hearts. After all, killing the boss is what gives you full hearts. Defeating Delvin at this point (and blowing out the dust) nets you an entirely new cutscene and some more to explore. Run through all of that, which is a mostly linear experience, and you’ll earn the “Perfect” ending. Also, bring Paige along for some bonus dialogue.
If you ever leave dungeon 9, you can always warp back through the Game Cartridge in the Key Items menu. The Ś͕͚̰͙͇a̗̤̻̣ͅg̳͎̮ͅe̟͙̝̟̮ ͖̼W̫̥̭̦̻i̡̳͚̖̠ͅs̩d͚̙̝o̰m̨̻͙̗ and H̨͔͇͈̹̼̘͇e̼͕̜͔͎̘ŗ̮̳̺̗̰̝o̗̹ḭ̯̻c͕̥͓̰̰ F̮͡ͅo͈̘̭̯̗r̪̘̰͈t̳͡i̹͚̯̺̥͟t̜̤͙̞̜͕̦u̧̻͔̬̯̠d̦̺̹̺͍̪̟͡e̤͓̳͖͢ achievements are earned here as well.

U Can't Touch ThisBeat the "0 Hearts" challenge

When starting a new game, instead of selecting "Story Mode", you're free to start one of the many challenge runs instead. All of the challenges are basically cut from the same cloth: go through the eight (sometimes less) main dungeons in a random seed, with whatever stipulation the challenge requires. Beat the last boss, and you get the achievement. Because there's no overworld, random item drops have gone from meteorites and heart pieces to blacksmith upgrades and other optional equipment, so it can be well worth your while to root through every last corner. By that same token, it's entirely possible to skip grabbing items like the Shield, so seriously, unless you're doing the 0 Hearts challenge and you're one room away from the final boss, take the time to explore.
Beyond that, most of the challenges don't differ too much from each other: stab and/or shoot and/or burn and/or blow up everything in your path until you win. No pacifism here, genuinely. The only notable difference is with the Bomb-only and Bow-only runs, which give you infinite ammo.

Also, the only companion you seem to get is Henrietta, so be on the lookout for Phoenix Ash!
Phone Numbers
40 Minutes Or Your Money BackOrder a pizza

Call the number for Triominoes (555-4545, found in The Lemon Pages book), pick any pizza, and wait forty minutes in real time for your pizza to arrive. Thankfully, you don't have to wait in one place; the pizza guy will show up wherever you are, even in dungeons. The pizzas don’t seem to differ from each other, instantly giving you a full heal no matter what you choose.

Natural 20½Play Tombs & Tentacles

One of the random library books is all about Tombs & Tentacles, with an offer for a free demonstration by calling 555-6666. Punch in the number, say “yes” to the stranger on the phone, and get ready for a one-on-one D&D game with a DM who just won't let you have fun.

Cheat DayCall the developer from in-game

This is the last achievement in this guide for a reason. The devs clearly expect (and maybe even encourage) this since there’s a whole achievement for it, but it takes some of the sport out of the other achievements if you just sprint straight for this one. With all of that in mind...
Call 555-8891 and you’ll gain access to both the achievement and a no-holds-barred debug menu. This is genuinely a dev tool, letting you obtain every single item at once, spawn whatever enemy in front of you, outright remove and change tiles as you see fit, and so much more. It’s fun to mess around with unlimited power, and it can even be used to net you some of the achievements. At the same time, it can also crash your game if you make a wrong move at any point. So, I’m just some text written by some dude, I can’t tell you how to play the game, but my suggestion would be to at least make an honest attempt at the other achievements before diving for this one.

There must have been an update to the game at one point. For me, the camouflage tunic DID work to get Mystery Item VII. I didn't have to hide at all. She did't even spot Paige who was standing next to me, enither hidden nor disguised.

Very useful guide, thanks! Any help for the Yo Dawg achievement (such as a seed or anything)? I have played on 3 to 4 different seeds and never managed to find a cave within a cave :lilimsob:

Just chiming in to say the world name of "Poppy Land" works for bypassing Lance's death as you can get an Explosive Potion very early to destroy jars.

Lance-a-lot can actually be acquired as soon as you get the first dungeon item (AKA once Lance dies), all you need to do is go to the shadow temple and unlock shadow lenna!
TrueEnder 6 Oct, 2023 @ 5:01pm
Seems your description for the hallucination tunic achievement might be a little out of date, because I didn't get it after beating the mentioned explosive crabs, instead I got it a few rounds later after the, uh... giant, exploding, on-fire spiders. Maybe it was moved, maybe just more rounds were added and it went up with them, I dunno.

Again, late to the party (of course), but the above guide has 1 mistake. Maybe the game got patched or something, but "The Man Who Sold The World" does require an item: The Power of Truth. I just had a run where I skipped every angel (otherwise, I did 100%) and tried to compassion him - it didn't let me. I got "Right, I Am Doing This", went back to compassion all the archangels and then it let me do it.
I didn't think to note if "Sympathy for the Delvin" was the same on that first run. At that point I'd decided to just retry on the final run.

2.5 years in the future: It seems seeds no longer work the same. I tried Wefieleffell a few times and didn't get the ash. What DID work for me was seed Xannia (found elsewhere online) and ignoring the guide attached. Here's what I did for all 4 achievements:
Make your way south 1, get 50$ and buy the Fizzy Orange drink (Fire). Go back and use it to plow through the ice and keep it going north and into the bridge. Once crossed, make your way north 2x and east into dungeon 5. There's also an explosion potion somewhere on the right side for the last achievement.
For extra fun, try for a no Lance run (or maybe Lance tour guide if you need him to open the first maze?). My exploration found the hammer and axe to be (relatively) easily obtainable on the east. That lets you chop bushes and hammer rocks, to go along with the bow from dungeon 5.

Thank you for your guide; I was banging my head against the wall wondering why I didn't have One With Everything despite having all the usable items.

I can help you with one thing, at least. I just got Heart-to-Heart today; it did require the last boss' heart.

Are you sure that you can compassion Gammon or Delvin when you aren't doing a perfect run? I can't seem to get it to work.
