1) About the videos and the "MPEG-2 driver error" :

Download Stinkys MPEG2 Codec : http://ns325580.ip-5-135-159.eu/Tex-Overseer/stinkys_mpeg2_codec.zip and install it on your system. To install it, extract the contents of the .zip archive somewhere on your hard drive. Run the "MPEG-2.exe" file and choose "Install Codec". Once it's done, you can close the program and delete the directory/files from your hard drive.

Then, in-game, choose "Standard MPEG-2 Device" as the MPEG-2 decoder (if it's not automatically detected) and magic, videos will work (ffdshow is not even required with that so you can disable it when it ask you if you want to load ffdshow. Choose "never load ffdshow" and "never show again").

Note : If you have graphical problems (wasn't my case, using a GTX 970 and 446.14 drivers) in "advanced settings (video)", try to use the "software" mode (instead of the "hardware" mode). Also, disable "animated textures" might help (if it's not already disabled, it was already disabled personally).

2) And for "ERROR : Error Code Does Not Indicate An Error" problem (caused because the game use an outdated MIDI mapper which isn't supported beyond "Windows XP").

Install VirtualMidiSynth : http://ns325580.ip-5-135-159.eu/Tex-Overseer/CoolSoft_VirtualMIDISynth_2.9.1.exe

Download the required soundfont : http://ns325580.ip-5-135-159.eu/Tex-Overseer/FluidR3_GM.SF2

Open 'Configure VirtualMidiSynth' and on the Soundfonts tab, press the green + icon. Select the FluidR3_GM.sf2 file.

Launch Tex Murphy: Overseer, go to settings, audio, and then change the MIDI device to "Microsoft MIDI Mapper", make sure that MUTE is not checked.

Don't forget to reboot the game once you changed the MIDI device, or music won't play.

Note : You don't need to reload "VirtualMidiSynth" when you play again the game later. It'll load automatically when the game is loaded, if the audio part of the game is still configurated correctly.

Do not select 'Coolsoft VirtualMidiSynth' as the MIDI output within the game, it must be 'Microsoft MIDI Mapper'. This will cause Overseer to output its MIDI correctly, then VirtualMidiSynth will pick up the signals and produce sound for you. A bit confusing, but it works.

With this method, it's easier and faster because the original explanation was asking you to install another program to create the .sf2 file from a compressed .sfArk file (144 Mb to 70 Mb). Nowadays, it's pretty useless (it's faster to download the uncompressed file), so I directly share the uncompressed 144 Mb file.

3) If you have missing textures/transparents objects :

For example, in Tex's office (first room of the game), check the cabinet to your left when you start (to the right of the sofa). If you see a solid black color for it, then it's fine.

If you don't see a solid black color for it but rather a transparent color (for example, if you see the mouse toy without having to open the drawer, then there's a texture problem).

To fix this problem, you need to download : http://ns325580.ip-5-135-159.eu/Tex-Overseer/dgVoodoo2_53.zip Extract the .zip archive in the root directory of the game (in the same directory where the "Overseer.exe" file" is). There are four files in it : D3D8.dll, D3DImm.dll, DDraw.dll and dgVoodooSetup.exe which should be in the same directory as the "Overseer.exe" file.

Once it's done, launch the "dgVoodooSetup.exe" file and use the configuration of those screenshots :

Confirm the changes with the "apply" button on each "page" then you can quit the program by clicking "OK".

The problem should now be fixed.

4) The game should now works fine (video and audio).

Note : I hosted the files myself to avoid potential dead links in the future.

This worked for me with the see through textures issue. I got dgvoodoo from Dege's instead.

Your files aren't working. for those who need it here is dgvoodoo 2.53 https://rockraidersunited.com/files/general-tools/dgvoodoo-253-r110/

After using dgvoodoo to fix textures, you will likely find your cursor disappearing. To fix this go to your gpu control panel for this game and select fast vsync. Cursor will still flicker but it will stop disappearing and game will run smoothly. Don't have vsync set to the on option or it slows and stutters the game.

Come to find out midi mapper is already in the game on fresh install, just select it in the options menu!

Deleting the registry key got it to start, thanks for that!

Also worth noting: it seems compatibility flags are set for this game. Going to RegEdit, into HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers and deleting the entry for OVERSEER.EXE solved a lot of things for me. These flags are, ironically, causing even more compatibility issues.

You are a savior! All of this still works perfectly on Windows 11, even using the GOG version. Thank you!

Thanks - Win 10 Build 19045, RTX 2080.
Game would not start, hung on black screen and then had to force close it, the DgVoodoo fix sorted it all out. Very thankful.

Try to check the watermark again, apply the changes and then try to uncheck it again (and apply the changes again).

Thanks -- October 2022 and this was really helpful -- I had exactly all the issues, and the fixes here worked pretty much perfectly. I got left with a dgVoodoo watermark in the corner of the screen even after unchecking all the watermark options in the settings, but that wasn't a big problem, and it was great to be able to play the game again after so many years :-)
