Introduction
Terraria has too many items, which is why this guide exists.

Obviously you're having trouble organising your items, which is why you have arrived at this guide. Fear not for you have come to the right place. I can help you.

We want this problem of spending too much time at our storage system to stop being a problem.

In order for our storage system to stop being a problem we need to be able to:

1. Access Chests easily with little resistance
2. Access Crafting stations easily with little resistance

3. Access NPCs easily with little resistance
4. Buy everything available in the NPC stores for the cheapest price

5. Access all locations of the world easily

6. Prevent evil biomes from spreading past certain points in hardmode

In order to access Chests, Crafting stations and NPCs with little resistance, while also being able to transport easily throughout the world we require a transportation method.
The best transportation methods that exists in terraria is teleportation.
You can teleport with quite a few items:
1. Magic Mirror Variant (Teleports to spawn)
2. Recall Potion (Teleports to spawn)
3. Teleportation Potion (Teleports to a random location)
4. Wormhole Potion (Teleports to another player)
5. Conch Shell (Teleports to the furthest ocean biome)
6. Demon Conch (Tries to teleport in the hell biome to anything west199ft - east199ft to an island formation with atleast 3 tiles wide for the player, and 1 tile beneath the centre tile)
7. Pylons (Allows multi-way teleportation to another pylon if that pylon is in the correct biome & there is atleast 2NPCs near the pylon & there is no event, when a player clicks the pylon and then clicks the pylon they want to teleport to on the map)
8. Teleporters (Allows teleportation to another teleporter)

Items that can teleport to an exact forced location:
Magic Mirror Variant, (Easymode)
Recall Potion, (Easymode)
Wormhole Potion, (Multiplayer Easymode)
Conch Shell, (Easymode)
Demon Conch, (Easymode)
Pylons, (Easymode)
Teleporters, (Hardmode)

Option Inventory Teleporter Network:
We can make a chest system, by having:
1. Magic Mirror
2. Conch Shell
3. Demon Conch
as we can force teleport to 4 specific locations.

Option Pylon Network:
We can make a chest system by having a mirror/conch that takes us to a pylon that links into a pylon network.

Option Teleporter Network:
We can make a chest system by having a mirror/conch that takes us to a teleporter that links into a teleporter network.

Option Pylon Network is the easiest one to make for new players.
Option Teleporter Network would be the most effective system, but is locked behind hardmode and a mechanical boss

We will build a Pylon Network in easymode, and then the Teleporter System in hardmode
(Easy mode) Create merchant and golfer forest spawn pylon
1. Make your new character
2. Make your new world
3. Cut down some trees with your axe until you get 400+ wood

4. Mark your spawn location with some of the wood (Click m to open your map)

5. Build your housing like this:

This housing is to store your merchant and golfer NPC,
a. The merchant requires the player to have at least 50 silver in their inventory to spawn.
b. The golfer needs to be found in the underground desert.

If you are a new player, you will need to come back to this section of the guide later on when you fulfil the pre-requisite conditions, in the meantime start on the next section.

6. Setup temporary storage next to pylon
(Requires chests)

7. Buy your piggy bank from the merchant, then place it.
(Requires merchant)

8. Buy a forest pylon from the merchant, then place it.
(Requires merchant)

9. Buy a safe from the merchant, then place it.
(Requires defeating skeletron)

10. Make a void vault from: 15 bone, 8 jungle spores, 15 tissue sample OR 15 shadow scales @Demon Altar
(Requires visiting the jungle)
(Requires defeating brain of cthulhu OR eater of worlds)
(Requires defeating skeletron)

11. Buy a defender's forge from the tavernkeep npc with 75 defender medals
(Requires finding the tavernkeep npc)
(Requires defeating the old one's army multiple times)

I recommend moving the tavernkeep to spawn, making hundreds of accounts, talking to the tavernkeep, then clicking the eternia crystal option (which rewards 5 defender medals), with every account until you have enough defender medals to buy the defender's forge.
(Easy mode) Create 8 temporary NPC housing atleast 120 tiles from spawn
1. Move 120+ tiles away from where you made your first NPC housing
2. Build 8 houses to store NPCs so new NPCs have a place to spawn at

As you play through the game, NPCs will spawn after their conditions are met. It is optimal to have NPCs already spawned so you can move them to optimal housing when you have them spawned.
(Easy mode) Find demon altar/crimson altar in the crimson/corruption
Requirements:
70+ Dynamite

1. Visit the corruption

2. Find the deepest ravine with a demon altar

In order for this demon altar to be useful, we need be able to teleport directly to it. The problem is we cannot setup NPC housing in the corruption which means we cannot setup a pylon to teleport to.
3. Clear out the corruption tiles with dynamite

Using dynamite effectively
a. Blasting into flat walls you cannot dig
i. Place a wooden block

ii. Aim your mouse directly beneath you

iii. Throw your dynamite

iv. Move out of the blast range & watch the explosion

b. Blasting a lot of tiles very fast
i. Aim mouse directly beneath you

ii. Throw 5 sticks of dynamite

iii. Move out of the blast range & watch the explosion

c. Blasting into flat walls you can dig
i. Dig out a groove in the wall

ii. Aim your mouse horizontally from the player

iii. Throw your dynamite

iv. Move to safety & watch the explosion

Use the prior mentioned techniques to remove large quantities of corruption.
(Easy mode) Create demolitionist and tavernkeep underground crafting station pylon
1. After finding a demon altar/crimson altar, place your crafting stations around it, and move your NPCs in.
Workbench (10 wood)
Chair (4 wood @workbench)
Table (8 wood @workbench)
Furnace (20 stone, 4 wood, 3 torch @workbench)
Anvil (5 iron OR lead bars @workbench)

a. Demolitionist requires a bomb in the inventory to spawn
b. Tavernkeep can be found unconscious underground

2. Buy a cavern pylon and place it

3. Make a sawmill and place it
Sawmill (10 wood, 2 iron OR lead bars, 1 chain @workbench)

4. Make a loom and place it
Loom (12 wood @sawmill)

(You may not be able to complete step 5, so come back to it)

5. Collect other crafting stations and place them:
Keg
Keg (14 wood @Sawmill)

Cooking Pot
Cooking Pot (10 iron OR lead bars, 2 wood @anvil)

Campfire
Campfire (10 wood, 5 Torches)

Extractinator
(Must be found)

Bookcase
(Recommended that you defeat Skeletron)
Bookcase (20 wood, 10 books @Sawmill)

Alchemy Station
(Recommended that you defeat Skeletron)
(Requires access to the deep parts of the dungeon)

Teapot
(Recommended that you defeat Skeletron)
(Requires access to mobs that drop bone)

Dye Vat
(Requires Dye Trader)

Tinkerer's Workbench
(Bought from Goblin Tinkerer, who can be found after defeating a goblin invasion)

Imbuing Station
(Requires Witch Doctor, who spawns after the queen bee is defeated)

Enchanted Sundial
(Found in fishing crates)

Hellforge
(Found in the underworld)

This is what your final crafting stations can look like before ending easymode and transitioning into hardmode: (Use this image as a guide as to where your crafting stations should go, should you get them)

6. Collect bonus crafting stations and place them:

Secondary Crafting Stations Segment:
Honey,
(Requires Bucket)
(Found in jungle hives)

Water,
(Requires Bucket)
(Found on surface layers to cavern layers)

Lava,
(Requires Bucket)
(Found on lower levels of cavern & in the underworld)

Heavy Work Bench
(12 wood, 8 iron @anvil)

Bone Welder
(Found in dungeon chests)

Glass Kiln
(18 iron bars, 8 torches @anvil)

Honey Dispensor
(Found in ivy chests in the underground jungle)

Ice Machine
(Found in frozen chests in the underground tundra)

Living Loom
(Found in living wood chests beneath those massive trees that spawn on the surface)

Sky Mill Terraria
(Found in skyware chests on floating islands)
This is what your final crafting stations can look like before ending easymode and transitioning into hardmode: (Use this image as a guide as to where your crafting stations should go, should you get them)

8 Gravestones (To activate graveyard biome & spawn ecto mist)
(Easy mode) Create arms dealer and nurse desert chest pylon
We are going to create a chest system at the arms dealer and nurse pylon.
A couple things you should know first.
There is a quickstack function in terraria which lets you quickly stack items from the player to nearby chests by clicking this button.

I did some testing of this function has revealed some aspects of the range of the quickstack function when the player is alligned onto 3 tiles. (using the magic mirror alligns the player onto 3 tiles when teleporting a player to a location, using the magic conch alligns the player onto 3 tiles when teleporting, using the demon conch alligns the player onto 3 tiles when teleporting)

The total amount of chests you can fit into the range of the quickstack function is 129.

Requirements:
19+ Chests
Wood

1. Place platforms and setup NPC housing for the arms dealer and nurse:
a. Nurse requires the player to have used a heart crystal to spawn
b. Arms dealer requires the player to have a gun in their inventory to spawn

The circle pattern we want to place our chests in allows the user to make use out of the quick stack to nearby chests function.

2. Buy a desert pylon and place it

3. Place your chests in this pattern

4. Name your chests according to categories in the hardmode part of the guide, or whatever category you want.

(Originally I believe the guide was supposed to have a text label on the image) with certain categories of items intentionally placed close to other categories of items to minimise player movement when extracting items from the chests.

5. Move your items from temporary storage at spawn, to the new storage location
(Easy mode) Create dryad and witch doctor jungle pylon
1. Make 2 houses for the dryad and witch doctor in the underground jungle

2. Buy a Jungle Pylon
(Easy mode) Create goblin and mechanic snow pylon
1. Make two houses in a safe location in the underground tundra for the goblin and mechanic

2. Buy a snow pylon and place it

Your pylon network & chest system for easymode is now complete!

This is just a demonstration that this chest organization system is possible in easymode. I do not recommend building this in easymode unless you are locked in easymode in accordance with multiplayer rules or you're playing some type of challenge.
This chest system is much more efficient for organization items in post-mechboss to post-moonlord.
(Hard mode) Chest System
1. Defeat the wall of flesh
2. Defeat a mechanical boss
3. Have the steampunker move into open housing (defeating 1 mechanical boss is her spawn condition)

4. Make sure you have these items before starting to make this:
Grand Design
5000+ Wire
3000+ Wood
1000+ Platforms
100+ Diamond Gemspark Walls
63 Teleporters (5 teleporters + 42 teleporters + 16 teleporters)
83 Switches (25 switches + 42 switches + 16 switches)
100 actuators
216 Chests (128 + (11 * 8))

5. Travel to your crafting station pylon and place a teleporter
If you do not have a crafting station pylon, you can make a crafting station module, all you need to do is find a demon altar, and then place your crafting stations around it like so.

6. Count up 75 tiles from the placed teleporter with platforms.
When a teleporter teleports the player to another teleporter, it either pans the camera to the new position of the player, or it instantly moves the camera to the new position. In order to instantly move the camera to the new position we require the distance of the teleporter to be greater than current resolution of our game window. The maximum resolution of terraria is 1920x1080 (as far as I know), so making sure there is 75 tiles inbetween each teleporter on the vertical axis ensures that the teleporter cannot pan the camera to the new position.

7. Place another 2 platforms on each side so you can place a teleporter ontop of the platforms

8. Place a teleporter ontop of the platforms

9. Make a house with a bed and set spawn

10. Move down to your crafting station module and move your furnace ontop of the teleporter

11. Place walls and switches

12. Demolish NPC Housing below crafting stations

13. Count 75 wooden platforms down

14. Place 3 temp blocks under the 75 platforms, then place 3 more platforms

15. Place teleporter

16. Place Walls & Switches

17. Build housing system around the teleporter
DO NOT MOVE ANY NPCs IN YET

There is 28 NPCs that can be housed currently in terraria
4 of those NPCs are function only
Guide
Nurse
Angler
Tax Collector
For these 4 functional NPCs we just setup nearby housing. So we can quickly utilize them.

3 of those NPCs only occupy housing
Town Cat
Town Dog
Town Bunny
For these 3 NPCs we don't house them in this location.

21 of those NPCs have stores
Merchant
Demolitionist
Dye Trader
Zoologist
Dryad
Painter
Golfer
Arms Dealer
Tavernkeep
Stylist
Goblin
Witch Doctor
Clothier
Mechanic
Party Girl
Wizard
Truffle
Pirate
Steampunker
Cyborg
Santa Claus
For the 21 store NPCs we make 21 houses capable of teleporting both the player and the NPC to a specific location. So we can quickly move our NPC to an ideal location to buy what they have to offer.

18. Move two NPCs of your choice, then place a pylon to connect your pylon network to the chest system.
I moved my guide & angler, and placed down the cavern pylon I broke earlier

19. Count 69 platforms down.

20. Place 3 dirt, then 3 platforms

21. Replace dirt with a teleporter

22. Place walls and switches

23. Make chest frame

24. Choose your chests
We will be dividing our items into 8 categories:
Tools(9)
Accessories(25)
Weapons(20)
Armour(9)
Tiles(17)
Placeables/Banners/Furniture/Platforms&Walls/Sprites(23)
Consumables/Ammunition/Potions/Bombs/TreasureBags/Bait(16)

You need a specific type of chest for each category, to make it easier to learn how to use the system you are making. These are the chests I chose:

25. Place your chests

Notice that each type of chest corresponds with a teleporter. These teleporters will lead to endless storage for that specific category.

26. Name and paint your chests according to category.
These are the sub-categories of the categories. Name your chests according to the sub-categorical names.

28. Place chests & teleporter to make an endless storage module

29. Connect endless storage module to 1 of the category teleporters in the chest module

30. Repeat steps 28, 29, 30 until all teleporter categories in the chest module are connected to an endless storage system.
When a chest fills up with too many resources, simply empty the chest, (while leaving placeholder items) and move the items to your endless storage section.
(Hard mode) Connecting the 4 modules
1. Place Red, Blue, Green, Yellow Wire connecting the central teleporters of the 4 modules you built:
Chest module:

Crafting station module:

Spawn module:

2. Place Red, Blue, Green, Yellow Wire to create a panel for each of the 4 modules you built:
Spawn module:

Crafting station module:

NPC module:

Chest module:

3. Extend the wire for each of the 4 modules
When a switch is activated. It transports players between the furthest teleporter connected to it & the closest teleporter connected to it.

Meaning if each teleporter has a unique extended wire, all other buttons on all other panels will teleport to it.

Corruption tile influence has 84 range
(Hard mode) Teleporter System
1. Make teleporter hub at spawn
for a small world you need 8 teleporters
for a medium world you need 12 teleporters
for a large world you need 16 teleporters

My chest system is at 2177' East.
And I am on a small world.

So I will have 6 teleporters to the left, and 2 teleporters to the right

2. Mark hellholes
What you need for this section:
1x Compass
Many Blocks (Small World: 56Blocks, Medium World: 84Blocks, Large World: 112 Blocks)
Mining Method

Ideally some of these holes are mined at the start of the game, when exploring the surface for the first time, but getting a compass very early on is not a feasible, because of the average amount of time required to farm for a compass.

Small world's horizontal axis is split up into 4116West, centreWest, centreEast, 4114East according to your compass
4116 + 2 + 2 + 4114 = 8234Ft
The Horizontal Axis has a total of 4117 Accessible Tiles (Counted)

Medium world's horizontal axis is split up into 6316West, centreWest, centreEast, 6314East according to your compass
6316 + 2 + 2 + 6314 = 12634Ft
The Horizontal Axis has a total of 6317 Accessible Tiles (Guess)

Large world's horizontal axis is split up into 8316West, centreWest, centreEast, 8314East according to your compass
8316 + 2 + 2 + 8314 = 16634Ft
The Horizontal Axis has a total of 8317 Accessible Tiles (Guess)

For every 2'Feet measurement in your compass, that corresponds with 1Tile.

For a small world you want to make a 7tile wide hole from the surface to the underworld at these compass coordinates:
4000West
3000West
2000West
1000West
0centreWest or 0centreEast
1000East
2000East
3000East
4000East

For a medium world you want to make a 7tile wide hole from the surface to the underworld at these compass coordinates:
6000West
5000West
4000West
3000West
2000West
1000West
0centreWest or 0centreEast
1000East
2000East
3000East
4000East
5000East
6000East

For a large world you want to make a 7tile wide hole from the surface to the underworld at these compass coordinates:
8000West
7000West
6000West
5000West
4000West
3000West
2000West
1000West
0centreWest or 0centreEast
1000East
2000East
3000East
4000East
5000East
6000East
7000East
8000East

If you are using scarab bombs, these holes will be 3 tiles wide, if you are using a pickaxe, these holes will be 2 tiles wide, if you are using bombs, these holes will be 8 tiles wide (If you are precise).

3. Mine out hellholes

4. Setup 4 teleporters for each hellhole

5. Place these items at the spawn/teleport module so you can quickly buff yourself before transporting to a new location:

I don't quite understand some of the categorisation choices made here. I hope you don't mind me asking questions. Is "Other Ranged" things like like grenades, throwing knives and whatnot? Why have a "harpoon" category when there's only one harpoon in the game dealing ranged damage? Or does the harpoon category also include stuff dealing melee damage like the Golem Fist and Anchor? Is "Magic Stationary" stuff like the Clinger Staff and Nimbus Rod? Where do gems go?

Unfortunately this guide is not too good for early mode, but it is possible to build this system in early mode, better to be built after mech bosses. As far as picture references go, I do not remember a single thing about writing this guide actually it's a completely distant memory. But fear not, there is categories you can use in the hardmode section, if you are determined.

Still some pictures missing on this guide like Just-Twille mentioned. Would love some added for reference.

Hey, some of the images in the guide appear to be missing/deleted? For example, the easy mode photo that showed all earlygame crafting stations and the easy mode chest pylon image showing what labels to give your chests. If this could be fixed that would be awesome, thanks!

Awesome and detailed guide. A little hard to follow, but it is well done. For the OCD master, this is great. For the "common man", it is total overkill.

@Dall If you merge together all your items from all playthroughs this is the best system. The more experience you get at the game the more you need to test stuff. Getting the best armour setup practically requires you to test every single item to some extent.

For what you want:
Furnace, Anvil, Workbench carried in your inventory.
Also stored in your inventory are: piggy bank, safe, dimension vault, defender's forge, which store crafting materials
Junk items are sold, stored chaotically in a straight row of chests, or trashed.

If you're storing iron in your piggy bank, and wood in your inventory, then you can make a sawmill, then loom, after placing anvil, furnace, workbench combination.
Tinkerer's workbench, (Sand, Glass, Bottle, Alchemy Table), in piggy.

There is a lot of work that went into this guide, but sadly it will wont be useful for 99% of players. I never needed more than 40 chests total for my playthroughs.
You dont need every single item in the game. Especially tools that become obsolete.
I am not hating, but I am disappointed that I am not able to find a guide with realistic numbers of chests and good optimizations for "average" playthroughs.

This is a mostly optimal crafting station setup with "pre-hardmode" ore/mob drops in the left chest and hardmode stuff in the right chest. You can reach every crafting station by opening a chest and standing in the middle.
