Useful Abbreviations/Acronyms
The Cambridge Dictionary describes "abbreviations" as follows: a short form of a word or phrase. An "acronym" is an abbreviation consisting of the first letters of each word in the name of something, pronounced as a word. Town of Salem uses a lot of them and you should familiarise yourself with as many as possible. Use this page as reference document or have a browse. For a full list, check out the Town of Salem website: https://town-of-salem.fandom.com/wiki/Glossary_of_Abbreviations

Basic Abbreviations
ToS = Town of Salem
Townie = A Town of Salem citizen, Often: A good Town member
VFR = Vote For Role
CC = Counter Claim (If people ask for CC, this means they are trying to find out what people claim. In a set role list, there is a Jailor. If people ask for Jailor CC?, they want to know if anybody else claims Jailor. Jailor is unique, so if somebody CCs, one person is lying)

TP/LO = Town Protective + Lookout required to watch over the person asking for it (usually requested by a Jailor or Mayor on Day 1. If you fail to do your duty and protect this person, you will be, most certainly, hanged for treason)

Role List (quick guide)
Always check the role list. I cannot stress this enough. You should check it as soon as you enter the game and make sure you know which roles can appear. People sometimes click the wrong mode and claim roles which cannot appear in this setting. I.e. If there is no slot for NE (Neutral Evil), claiming Executioner will get you killed. The role list is your tool for victory and the only tool you really need. Use the wiki for more details - https://town-of-salem.fandom.com/wiki/Roles Beware of the wall of text, though.

Tips and Tricks
As we have established, the role list is the essential tool to win every round.
The example was taken from a Normal Ranked Practice game.

This is an example layout you can use in your notes.
Jailor
TI --
TI --
TP --
TK --
TS --
RT --
RT --
RT --
NK --

Let's look at an example.
(1) claims Escort and somebody claims to have been roleblocked. The Spy confirms the person visited by (1) was not visited by Mafia. Your logical conclusion is that (1) is Escort and TS
(2) claims Mayor and is revealed. (2) is RT because (1) already takes the slot for TS
(3) claims Transporter. people have been transported and this is proven. (3) can only be RT
(4) is Retributionist and dead. (4) can only be RT

TS -- (1) Escort
RT -- (2) Mayor
RT -- (3) Transporter
RT -- (4) Retributionist (dead)

The only roles that are still open now are:
TI --
TI --
TP --
TK --

Let's look at what (5) is claiming:
(5) I am Medium. The dead have spoken to me.

We know that all RT roles are full (all spots are full). RT 1 is Mayor, RT 2 is Transporter, RT 3 is Retributionist. We know, Medium is TS, but there is no spot available. (5) is lying and needs to be hanged, executed, or shot.

Keeping track of roles is essential. Write down what people claim and update your list. This is an example from one of my games:
Can you find out what the last RT was?

It was 5 - Lookout
An Example of Day 1 and Day 2 (Mafia)
Day 1
Day 1: The chat is empty apart from a lone person typing this (player number in brackets):
(7) Willie: TP/LO please

Explanation = This is a common strategy for Jailors at the moment to ask for protection without revealing who they are. It means they want a Town Protective and a Lookout to watch them at night to report on who visited them or help them.
Solution = TP and Lookout action required
TP = Bodyguard, Doctor, (Coven: Do not defend this person if you are Crusader! This will result in townies dying due to you killing every visiting role)

Night 1
Night 1: Your role? You are Godfather.
Remember that (7) Willie asked for TP? That means Willie is likely going to be protected tonight. Attacking Willie would most likely be a grave mistake.
Instead you attack (8) Human. The mafioso goes to his house to murder him.

Day 2: Human has died.

Your mafioso managed to murder him.

The chat enfolds as follows:

(3) Deodat: I was roleblocked!
(3) Deodat: stop rb me
(7) Willie: 4 was in jail last night
(9) Ann: I was witched
(10) Oscar: 2 is maf. N1 - 8 vb 2

(3) Deodat: I was roleblocked!
The first thing that happened was that somebody was roleblocked. If your mafia has no consort, this means that an escort is present. Escorts are highly dangerous since they can prevent you from murdering. Make a note that you need to focus the escort. Deodat also asks to stop "rb" him, which means he does not want to get roleblocked anymore.

(7) Willie: 4 was in jail last night
Secondly, number 7 is likely Jailor since they know who was jailed. However, this is not guaranteed as they have not confirmed it. They could be a visiting role, i.e. a Sheriff, who wanted to visit 4 but could not since 4 was in jail.

(9) Ann: I was witched
Thirdly, 9 was visited by a witch and controlled. Remember that the Witch is NE and that means that there is no Jester or Executioner in this round. Sometimes, Witches claim that they were witched to out themselves to the Mafia. Write down that they were witched.

(10) Oscar: 2 is maf. N1 - 8 vb 2
Lastly, 10 is accusing your mafioso! "N1 - 8 vb 2" means that in night 1, 8 was visited by 2. 2 is your mafioso. 10 must be a Lookout who has seen your attack.
Strategy 1: Your mafioso can defend themselves by accusing 10 as Executioner. An Executioner wants to hang their target at all costs.
Strategy 2: Your mafioso can accuse 10 of being a Jester and try and get them hanged. Beware, however, that if 10 does get hanged, the Jailor will most likely execute your mafioso.
Strategy 3: Your mafioso claims that 10 is a framer and has visited them to frame them. They are trying to get good people hanged so that they can pretend to be a Townie.
You should not interfere as you could be jailed.

Notes
At this point, you should already have the following notes:
- 3 could be NK since only one person died during night 1. No second murder during night 1 indicates the presence of an Arsonist or Werewolf as well.
- 7 is either Jailor or a visiting role
- 9 could be witch or was witched
- 10 is Lookout

Sadly, the town hangs your mafioso and the day ends.

Night 2
Night 2:
With your notes, you have established that 10 is a priority. Since we do not know what roles are available in town, 10 is not a good shot tonight. Since your mafioso has been hanged, you as Godfather will be doing the murdering now. So be extra careful. A bodyguard can kill you. A good call is to attack somebody who has been quiet but been voting fast. Your goal is to murder the escort since they could lose the game for you.
Roles and Abilities
The following sections include all roles. If you do not know what to claim as evil role, check out the Tips and Tricks section.

As this guide would otherwise explode, I have included all roles relevant for Normal (Coven) Classic and Ranked Practice in separate categories. If you feel confident enough, you can check out the Town of Salem Wiki: https://town-of-salem.fandom.com/wiki/Roles

Survival
This is a collection of game knowledge you will need.

Tips related to Vampire
  • Mayor - a bitten Mayor will only have 1 vote
  • Vampire Hunter - if vampires visit the VH, they die

Tips related to Mafia
  • If a Mafioso is roleblocked or jailed, the Godfather kills.
Should the Godfather die to a Bodyguard, you know the Mafioso was roleblocked or jailed.

Tips related to NK
  • Serial Killer - If an Escort roleblocks a Serial Killer, the Escort dies to Serial Killer.
  • Serial Killer - If jailed and not executed, the Serial Killer kills the Jailor.
  • Werewolf - If jailed and not executed, the Werewolf kills the Jailor on a full moon night.
  • Werewolf is only suspicious on even nights, Arsonist is never suspicious.
  • Arsonist - any target doused by the Arsonist will appear as Arsonist/Bodyguard/Godfather to an Investigator. The Consigliere sees them as Arsonist.

Tips related to Coven
  • The Coven gets the Necronomicon in night 3. This empowers one of its member's abilities. The Coven Leader gets it first.
  • Coven Leader - can control targets into Medusa to guarantee a kill.
  • Medusa - Will often ask for TP to bait people into her gaze.
  • Hexmaster - The Hexmaster is one of the only roles who appears solely evil - Your target could be a Framer, Vampire, Jester, or Hex Master. However, the Hexmaster actively "hexes" people and changes their results to the aforementioned. You can claim any role you are confident in as Hexmaster as long as you do not visit night 1 and then claim "hexed".
The Modes
The first confusing part of ToS is certainly the sheer amount of modes.

Normal
Classic
Includes a fixed set of roles, a good place to start

Ranked Practice
Includes randomly generated roles

Ranked
This mode is competitive and it uses the same layout Ranked Practice does. You need to have played at least 10 games of Ranked Practice and 50 games in total

Custom
Custom
This allows you to freely pick the roles you want to use. Best played with groups of friends as the host decide what roles are in the game (remember you can /repick to change the host)

Rapid
The timer is cut in half

Chaos
All Any
Any roles (the game only allows a certain number of townies by the way, 10 is the maximum I have found thus far)

Rainbow
Roles in the colours of the rainbow

Dracula's Palace
You are fighting vampires and not the mafia! Includes a special role on the list (Vampire Hunter)

Town Traitor
The new mode. 3 mafia, 1 witch, and a TRAITOR. The Traitor is a random Townie who will be siding with the Mafia. They can read the mafia chat. The only role that cannot be Traitor is Retributionist.
Win condition: All Mafia members need to be hanged. If the Traitor should be the last evil person alive, the Town has 3 Days to find the Traitor.

Coven Modes

Normal
Coven Classic
Includes a fixed set of roles, a good place to start. Instead of the mafia, you fight the Coven.

Ranked Practice

Mafia Returns

Town Traitor
Includes 4 Coven roles who fight against the Town with a Traitor.
This is a rotating Mode.
Win condition: All Coven members need to be hanged. If the Traitor should be the last evil person alive, the Town has 3 Days to find the Traitor.

Lover
Townies are randomly paired with "Lovers". Protect your Lover at all costs.
Win conditions:
  • Only Townies with Lovers remain. Every bad role with a Town Lover wins as well.
  • Only Lovers remain - Any Lover pair will win.
VIP
Protect the VIP at all costs. If the VIP dies, the Town loses.
