This video covers Premium Benefits, the server mod. Not to be confused with anything related to upgrading a Team Fortress 2 account from Free to Play to Premium.

Premium Benefit is a Team fortress 2 server plugin. Unlike most mods presented in this series, Premium Benefit isn’t a full blown mod-gamemode. It’s a significantly game-changing mod but doesn’t affect standard game objectives.

Premium Benefit servers in Team Fortress 2 first appeared shortly after the game launched in October 2007. Currently there are roughly 200 servers with Premium Benefit.

So what is Premium Benefits?

Premium Benefit is a mod where players who donate money towards a server receive benefits when playing on said server.

Premium Benefit servers can be separated into 2 categories. Cosmetic benefits and pay-to-win.

Cosmetic benefits servers basically reward players who donate with cosmetic rewards. Things like particle effect on their weapons or something not really game-changing like being picked last to be autobalanced.

Pay-to-win Premium Benefits on the other hand are essentially cheats rewarded to player who donate. Benefit granted to a player differs from server to server greatly. Some example of Pay-to-win Premium Benefits are: faster momement speed, no recharge timers on items, playing as a tiny player and no respawn times.

Pay-to-win Premium Benefit servers exist as a constant point of discussion in the Team Fortress 2 community. Players despise and blacklist these servers. Playing on and supporting these servers is frowned upon. A recurring point of criticism about theses kinds of servers concerns their inclusion in the quickplay system. Players argue these servers shouldn’t be available in quickplay as they don’t represent a true Team Fortress 2 play-experience and could leave new players with a bad first encounter with the game.

And that’s basically Premium Benefits in a nutshell. A way for servers to make money in either a reasonable or an arguably despicable way.

Thanks for reading. Don't forget to like/fav if you did.
Other Notes
  • Don't play on pay-to-win premium benefit servers. Even for messing around.
  • Minecraft is game notorious for having pay-to-win premium benefit servers. In Minecraft almost all of all competitive or minigame servers offer advantages for money.

This is how I sum up Pay to win servers: Abuse your parent's credit card, Dominate entire enemy team, Get killed by someone who is filthy rich, Scream at player for supposedly "Hacking" and have everyone hate you even more, Scream more for being killed by an Extremely skilled player Who is basically Free to play on the server and Finally rage quit.

well actually if you don't like those servers you can simply blacklist them, i like to play on those servers not because i'm a n00b or because i like to humiliate other people (in fact i have over 1000 hours in tf2) but because on nighteam servers (almost) everyone is premium so the game is still balanced, just a lot faster

I played on these before. What a load of crap. 1 soldier dominated our entire team. because of his premium account he bought. These severs really need to be gone. They keep the noobies from getting better to. I am sure mostly kids play these servers though.

Great explanation! Thank you for explaining Premium Benefit servers to me as I am a fairly new player here to Team Fortress 2.
