Tip for finding the save file: just right click on the game, select "properties" and go to "installed files" - hit "browse..." and it will show you the folder, which might be in a different place if you custom installed or have an x86 set of folders.
What worked:
1) delete the file right after exiting the game
2) restart the game and select "yes" to "overwrite damaged file"
3) THEN exit and do 'verify local files' in steam to get the file back (the game will crash on starting new game if you don't do this)
I don't think this file is the save file, just that deleting it will make the game think your save is corrupt and offer to delete it. Then put the file back and play as normal.
The actual save games might live in <steam_dir>\userdata\<your_steam_id_number>\43000, based on some googling, but I haven't tested it.
