they can die in battle sometimes, it's not consistent but i'vecleared out the gang leader from pravend in mine and now theres only 3 'influential' people (spellcheck)
The biggest protip i could give is to go to the training field from the beginning of the game and grab thw two handed sword at the melee training field, then practice parrying/chambering until you've got it down. Once you can effectively parry/chamber at least 3/4 of attacks coming at you, you'll be able to solo every thug encounter and civilian quest in the entire game. There's a guide on here with videos and written instructions on how to learn how to parry & chamber as quickly as possible using the training field, look it up.
I do this, then talk to the companion following me in town and talk to them, then tell them 'Go Find all my companions in the city and bring them to me'. Once your whole posse of armored dudes arrives go to the bandit locations and do the thug encounter.
