198X 100% Achievement Guide
By Varelico
I want to start off by saying all of these achievements are doable. None of them are impossible or overly difficult but I imagine the reason they have such low completion rates is because of how outrageously slow the menus are. Every time you restart a game you must go back to the main menu and go through the same unskippable menu sequence and cutscene to get back into the game which can be very frustrating especially since some of these achievements can be messed up easily early on. If you are aware of this and still want to get the achievements then this is the guide for you!

Reach level MAX in Kill Screen

Max level is level 10 at 999 XP. For this achievement you can just defeat 2 of the 3 dragons then run back and forth in a hallway until you get enough random encounters to hit max level. If you reach max level by defeating the last dragon you will still get the achievement.
Bare Knuckle
Complete Beating Heart without dying or using pick-ups

This game has potential to be a bit frustrating because of some of the characters in it having very fast attacks and because of how long the custscene is to get into the game coupled with the long menu times. The basic strategy to kill enemies is to hit them twice, stop the combo long enough for it to reset then spam a full combo out to kill them with no knock down. For big enemies you need to cancel the combo twice and I demonstrate this a few times throughout the video below.

Most enemies are safe to engage by walking above them then walking down into them and starting the combo. This is because some enemies especially the longer range ones will be able to attack you before you get into range if you walk straight into them. I have more specifics for how to deal with these stronger enemies below.

Noize w/ Bat
Noize is normally not a threatening enemy because of his small range and long time to attack but coupled with a bat he becomes an issue if you aren't careful. If you try running straight at him he will whack you down before you can even touch him. Once he knocks you down once it is easy for him to stay on top of you by walking forward and aligning with you horizontally which will set him up for another hit that is incredibly difficult to react to. One major problem with him is once you are in his attack range it is near impossible for him to miss so it doesn't matter where you go as you will get hit for a lot of damage.

To beat him you need to walk above him then walk down on top of him and hit him with the basic combo I mentioned before to kill him. If you end up knocking him down without killing him you can just stand on top of him and make sure you finish him when he gets up.

Riot
Don't be fooled by his lack of a weapon. He is actually much more frustrating to go against than Noize because he has pretty much the same damage and range as Noize but he attacks much faster. If you end up within his attack range you will quickly find yourself knocked on the ground with a chunk of health missing. If you end up with Riot in front of you the best thing you can do is try to get above him and deal with him similar to Noize or try to jump kick him to knock him down then get on top of him. Just be warned if you time the jump kick wrong you will hit each other and both get knocked down.

Hubba
Hubba is the first big brawler you run into and he honestly isn't that bad. His buffer time is slow enough that he is really not threatening at all but the one catch to him is that you can't grab him. If you stand directly on top of Hubba and try to initiate the grab attack he will just push you down leaving you vulnerable to attacks as enemies surround you. The best way to deal with him is approach him from above like most enemies in this game and just hit him with the first two attacks of your combo twice (hit him twice, pause for a second then hit him twice again) then full combo to kill him in one go.

Bubba
He is just Hubba with a faster attack and it makes him a lot more annoying to deal with. This guy attacks often enough that you can see how broken the hitbox is on his attack. He is the one character that at times genuinely annoyed me because of how often he would be the reason I need to restart. To deal with him you need to be quick and approach him from above. I would not recommend even trying to jump kick him as most the time you are going to trade hits which you really don't want as he does a lot of damage. If you are afraid of going near him you can try using the barrels to get a free knockdown to get on top of him which I do in the video.

Sorry that the video has no audio. I honestly have no idea what went wrong as all the other videos I made with no changes to settings had audio. A few things I want to note on the video are the combo I do to kill enemies in one combo so I don't worry about them getting up and using barrels to knock down the more annoying enemies. Once you make it to the three barrels and your health disappears you are at the end of the level but I would not risk getting hit if it will kill you.

Kill 'em all
Destroy every enemy in Out of the Void without losing a life

This one is actually pretty easy which is refreshing because the intro to this game is particularly long which would make it very annoying to restart. You don't need to kill the missiles that the rocket enemy fires as you can see I miss some in the video and in the end you don't need to kill the golden rocket launchers as the achievement will already pop up when they appear. One thing I was unsure of is the red snake enemy I miss but I believe I kill it as I fly into it. Either that or it is the same enemy that appears slightly later which I kill when it loops back into me but I believe i kill it as it took one charge shot and a lot of single shots on the way up. An easy way to get this achievement would be to clear a wave of enemies then keep checking forward int he video to see what will be coming next to prepare yourself.

Hard drivin'
Complete The Runaway without a single collision

This is another simple one to get but there is little advice I can give about how to get this achievement other than get used to the controls and make sure you brake on turns. Once you get out of the tunnel it is really easy to avoid the cars because the road is much wider. I want to note that vehicles can come from behind you and run through you which counts as a collision. Be careful during the last few seconds as once the game stops you some vehicles can still come up from behind you and I don't know if a collision during that time would prevent you from getting the achievement.

Sorry for all the discord sounds, when I recorded this I was not in streamer mode.

Shadow dancer
Complete Shadowplay without taking damage

Disclaimer
This one is just annoying. if there was any achievement that would frustrate you to the point of giving up it would be this one. The achievement itself isn't even hard I have completed much harder games it is just the long menu times coupled with the frequency you need to restart made me actually consider if I was valuing my time by doing this. The game itself takes just under 8 minutes to complete but add in the fact that it is easy to make a mistakes and that menu time adds up quick. If you want to get this done with as minimal frustration as possible I would just recommend going a few points ahead in the video, get there in game, pause then repeat. That way you can be ample prepared for what is coming ahead of time. If you don't want to do that and you enjoy the challenge then here are some tips that will help.

Tips
  • Go for the Shadow dancer and Playing with power achievements separately.
  • Always try to stay on the left side of the screen so you have the most time to react to obstacles/enemies. Do the exact opposite of this when running from the shadow monster as standing near him will damage you even if he doesn't attack your row.
  • Blue orbs will show you a safe way to continue, this is especially important in the second area as there are a lot of traps. Plus this will give you practice for the Playing with power achievement.
  • You can complete the third area 100% of the time by just sitting in the top left part of the screen and spamming slash. You will never get hit by doing this so you can use this time to relax before the next areas.
  • Once you learn when certain enemies come feel free to move forward so you can quickly kill them before they can attack.
  • Once you get full power your attack range and damage are increased. It makes a pretty significant difference for shuriken ninjas and the witches so I would recommend getting it as soon as you can in area 1.
  • This is by far the most important tip I can offer as it is the only time where you can be put in a situation where you have to take damage. In the final area when the monster stops chasing you for the first time you must follow the blue orbs to the top platform while killing the rows of the masks otherwise you will reach a point where you will be forced to jump to the top platform right into a long row of masks otherwise you run straight into a spear wall

Playing with power
Collect all power-ups in Shadowplay

This one is a lot easier than the shadow dancer achievement because you are allowed to take damage. If you miss a power up though, you can not die and restart you have to start over. This is why early on in the video I intentionally take 2 damage, my goal is to go through the area and get all of the power ups without dying so if I were to miss a power up it would most likely be near the end of an area so I would need to die fast. This is particularly an issue in the first and third area because you have no way to instantly die if you mess up and the invincibility frames after getting hit last a significant amount of time. Once you reach the second phase of the chase where the shadow monster attacks much faster there is no more power ups to collect so you just need to focus on living. Power ups also typically will lead you to the safe path so by following them you would be avoiding most surprise oncoming obstacles like boulders or spike walls. Some advice for the 5th area would be that for the first phase of the shadow chase stand as close to the left as you can without touching the shadow so you can have time to react to the power ups coming at you. This will take you a few times to complete so try not to get frustrated and try to remember what to do during difficult parts.

Mastermind
Complete the Kill Screen maze using only super effective attacks

This is probably the easiest achievement to get just use the pictures below to see which attacks are super effective then play the game. Even if you die you get the achievement which I demonstrate in the video. Also the attacks for the final boss do not matter at all just get through it and you get the achievement after the fade to black. The super effective attack is the one highlighted in white.

Congratulations!

Great news, cutscenes no longer play at the start of games when you chose them at the start menu. When you want to retry, you only have to sit through the 198X start screen, and the start screen of the respective game you choose. If you want to rewatch a cutscene, you instead have to finish the preceding game, and cutscenes will continue as normal until you quit.

Can also confirm that "Kill Them All" allows for at least two missed enemies (one being the red snake, the other being a grey missile bomber.

Just an add-on to make Hard Drvin' easier. The moment you get out of the tunnel and hit the checkpoint you can just stop completely. No cars will spawn and the game ends no matter how far you go.

I can confirm that "Hard drivin' " achievement will be voided if car or bike runs through you until you see "Time's up" message. :Sadclot:

I can confirm that there is a bit of leeway (like 2 or 3 enemies) for "Kill Them All".

Excellent guide, thanks! Just a little correction: for Playing With Power achievement you cannot die. Once you get a Game Over screen, count rests. Had quite a few runs today and only got the achievement after completing the run without death.
