Kingmaker's UGCW Brigade Names
By Kingmaker
In Ultimate General: Civil War, you can customize all of your unit names as soon as you create them.

I've seen several helpful threads with suggestions for brigade names, but none were comprehensive enough for my tastes. So I've done a considerable amount of research to try to find as many interesting (and eclectic) unit names as I could. The vast majority of them are historical, although there's so many that there's bound to be some errors somewhere. At the very end, I posted a small section of my own "custom" ideas.

The following guide is essentially a thorough listing of Union and Confederate infantry and cavalry brigades, plus many regimental and company names for infantry, cavalry, artillery and sharpshooters, as well as a few custom/ahistorical suggestions.

If you like this guide, you should definitely check out Minas Moth's helpful Civil War Units guide too.

This is a great list, but now I'll be staring at a screen and naming all my CSA units for a few hours! Ha ha

Nice job ... add " 12th Battalion Arkansas (Rapleys Sharpshooters) CSA

dlonge2: Thank you! I think I have all three of the ones you mentioned listed under brigades (although two of them were actually regiments).

I was looking for a few old friends of mine: 8th Wisconsin 'Eagle' regiment. 42nd Pennsylvania (13th Pa Reserve) 'Bucktails'. (149th and 150th PA), 'Harpers Ferry Cowards' brigade (Willard's brigade,II Corps...But let me compliment you on your labors!

@rs2excelsior: The Black Eagle Rifles were Company E of the 18th VA. I’ve added the Liberty Hall Volunteers as you requested.

@ctrl + alt + de1337: Thanks, mate. I’ve made the correction.

This was a good job, but one small thing that I saw with the Union Infantry Regiments was that the 14th NY was not the 14th Brooklyn. The 14th Brooklyn was officially named the 84th NY but they kept their original identity as the 14th Brooklyn.

In contrast, the 14th NY Infantry was a separate regiment and was in Griffin's Brigade of the 5th Corps during the Seven Days Campaign (Gaines' Mill and Malvern Hill are featured in this game) and was later in Sweitzer's Brigade at Fredericksburg when Griffin was promoted to Division commander. I only know because my own great-great grandfather was in Company I of the 14th New York Infantry.

As someone who does reenacting in a unit portraying a company of the 18th VA Infantry, I've never heard the name "Black Eagle Rifles." I'll have to do some looking and see if I can find that name.

I know you can't put every company name (because the list would be massive), but one you might like to add is the Liberty Hall Volunteers - Company I, 4th VA Infantry, formed from students at Washington College (which had been known as Liberty Hall during the revolution, and is still in operation as Washington and Lee University).

How do you name?

Renamed all of my units to match these, still early in the campaign though(Union Malvern Hill)so I will no doubt be back for more in a few
