Australian Federation House 5

Beskrivning
‘Clooneen’, was located at 149 Livingstone Ave, in the Sydney suburb of Pymble.

The single story federation cottage was built in 1912. It originally sat on 3 acres, and included stables, fowl yards, a citrus orchard and a vegetable garden at the rear. The front included a rose garden, an avenue of camphor laurel trees and a tennis court. The out buildings also included a garage, and a “mans room”, whatever that is.

It was subdivided in 1922, leaving 1.3 acres, and later subdivided leaving its current 0.67 acres.

The house was largely unchanged until alterations in 1998, when roof dormers were added for an attic bedroom suite, and a casual living area was added at the rear.

Despite a community campaign to stop development of 19 retirement units on the block, ‘Clooneen’ was recently demolished. The house didn’t meet the minimum threshold of significance for state or local heritage, and there was no consideration of the streetscape, the character of the suburb, or the aesthetic value of the house and garden.

As one local resident summed it up: “You can’t prune a medium sized tree in your own backyard, but apparently knocking down a heritage house for development is no problem!”

The carport is available here:

No Kasimchin6. I did live on Livingstone Ave for a while though, and can attest that putting 19 retirement units on the block is completely out of character, and elderly residents wont be able to walk to shops or the train station.
