Used to be mobsters would run coin operated businesses and other assorted fronts. Now they just get involved in art galleries for modern art. It's the only way that being paid 30,000 for a banana taped to a wall works. "ART IS SUBJECTIVE" I hear all the time. I counter with "The subject here is a brief case full of Benjamins your art is irrelevant."

The part you didn't know Nails+Tape is that modern art is often used for money laundering and repaying favors indirectly. Say you were involved in shady business dealings. You need a way to legitimize that money. Modern art is a good way to turn dirty money into clean money fast. The more tasteless and nonsensical the 'art' the better.
