Homusubi's Emishi (Aterui)

ΠΕΡΙΓΡΑΦΗ
Given the massive amount of written history that has come out of Japan over the last two millennia, it perhaps seems odd that, right up until the late first millennium AD, the northern part of Honshu was occupied by a culture which we know very little about. They most likely didn't even call themselves 'Emishi', a term meaning something along the lines of 'northern barbarian', used by the people of the Yamato state that evolved into what we now know as the state of Japan. The Emishi were largely, but not exclusively, hunter-gatherers; they did not speak Japanese; they did not have a written cultural tradition; and they were exceptionally skilled at mounted archery and guerrilla warfare when they had to be. Not that much is known about the Emishi apart from that, not even who they were, when they reached Tohoku, whether they were ethnically Yamato, or Ainu, or something else entirely. The Yamato didn't seem to care - there are plenty of records of conquests and battles in northern Honshu up until the full Yamato domination of the region was assured, but nobody ever seemed to venture into the Emishi lands in peace. Yet why should their story be any less valuable than that of the Yamato?

THE EMISHI - ATERUI

UA - SOTAISHO
Mounted Units suffer no Combat Strength penalty against Cities, and may benefit from defensive terrain bonuses.
When war is declared against the Emishi, receive a free contemporary Mounted Unit in each City within three tiles of a worked source of Horses.

UU - TUMIKORKUR
Replaces the Chariot Archer. May indirect fire, and counts as mounted for the purposes of the Emishi UA.

UI - KURA
+1 Food, and +1 Culture after researching Industrialisation. Units trained in a City working at least two Kura begin with their respective first-level rough terrain promotions, at least four Kura may ignore rough terrain costs, and at least six Kura gain one additional attack per turn. Must be built on Forest or Jungle.

No problem! 蝦夷 in 蝦夷共和国 refers to Ezo (the island), now known as Hokkaido. So both of them come from the idea of the land north of Wajin country being "barbarian", but once the Emishi had been subjugated/vassalised it came to refer to Hokkaido, which was still the land of the Ainu people.

oh...i thought 蝦夷 means wajin/yamato people because of the word 蝦夷共和国. i didn't know 蝦夷 is refer to northern japan. thx for your reply.

It's because we have no idea what the Emishi called themselves, and so the best we have is the name the Yamato gave them - "Emishi" - which does indeed mean barbarian. The other kanji in 蝦夷 means prawn and that would be worse

夷literally means barbs in chinese ,japanese and korean. it is better to not use such a subjective word in any civ logo :)

Very interesting seeing a mod that focuses on a lesser known age/people of Japanese history! I like the civ mechanically as well. To me it looks like it derives inspiration from the way Genghis Khan in vanilla can stomp with his Keshiks, but without the unit itself being so brazenly overpowered. The player actually has to do something to bolster them. Keep up the good work!

As a Chinese 夷 is not a good vocabulary。

@Fiona Thanks hehe, Bosmer-controlled Tohoku would be quite something! Incidentally I believe this fills the last completely insurmountable TSL hole on your massive Japan map.

@Safiye indeed, as @greensniperhat has pointed out, we don't know what the Emishi called themselves (although it might have sounded something like Ainu, given that the word Ainu just means 'person' in Ainu language), and there aren't any other potential symbols to use other than their kanji name. Furthermore, the other kanji in 蝦夷 Emishi, 蝦, apparently means prawn, so that's just stranger still.
