'N' - Hit this key to toggle location icons above locations - including water and oil tanks.

Water is not found in:
  • Bodies of water
  • Bathroom sinks or toilets
  • Water towers
  • In Oil tanks

Intuition is not useful in this circumstance, don't bother trying to fill your empty bottle while next to, in, or on a body of water, it just doesn't work. Neither does a tap in a sink work, nor from a toilet. I'm thinking the devs are not a fan of TLD.

What I'm getting from this and what I've seen in the bit of time I've been playing is

The tutorials in game are a bit longwinded and feel unpolished.

The game is in early access, this is an issue to bring up to the devs to help develop a more engaging tutorial.

Yeah... If would have played the Tut you woudnt write such a "guide"... "thank you for nothing", its all i can say to you...

You do get water from bodies of water. it's dirty water, but all you need to do is boil it.

when standing next to a body of water you open your inventory then click on the empty bottle and you get dirty water! You then build a camp fire, place the campfire on the ground reopen your inventory and click on the lighter or on the bow string fire starter and light the campfire. You then can make the dirty water clean water by boiling it!
