Report a translation problem
I think the shadow spread to the surface only after player does nothing in the control room.
It seems the shadow just spread to the outpost when the player is in the elevator to the control room, because Virgil saying "Grab a lamp and create a safe zone". Virgil also says "why would you ever suggest that" so James might be saying destroy the CORE for good.
Virgil rejected James suggestion, thus when player pulled the third lever, a phone call tells that James has left the outpost. (Going to destroy the CORE himself)
In my interpretation this is only because we did nothing to shut down the core (in the alternate ending). And that shutting down the core saved humanity.
Yes I'm kinda optimistic.
