This may change in future Steam updates. [21 Nov 2013]

UPDATE > STEAM fixed it

_________________________________________
[1] Go to Steam settings Beta and press "change" and select "Steam Beta Update"

Press restart. It will start downloading.

after that, Steam will restart.

[2] Disable Auto Update for Modern Warfare 2 SP and MP (or just MP when SP isnt installed).

[3] Close/Exit Steam

____________________________________________________________________________

[4] Move to your Steamfolder and open the SteamApps Folder

[5] Search for appmanifest_10180 [for SP] and appmanifest_10190 [for MP]

[6] Open these files with Notepad [Notepad++ recommed]

[7] Delete the marked lines. There can be differences in your files.

save and close the files.

[8] Start Steam and launch MW2 Multiplayer

you will get the following message
[if you don´t launch Steam in beta mode, it will force the update and the recent changes will be gone]

press launch now and Modern Warfare 2 will start without Mappacks.

after

The DLC´s will not be deleted from your Steam Account and your Harddrive. If you wish to play the mappacks you have to press "update" but you have to change the "appmanifest" files again if you wish to play without mappacks.

no more "Steam Support Delete Method".

I still use this method over the gui one inside settings because steam forces you to re download the dlc each and every time

Update is Online > Steam fixed it.

yeah it stopped working correctly for me as well... butthe trick to this is to just after its updated erroneously exit steam completely then re-edit manifest 10190 by deleting mounted depots and shared depots and then restart mw2 mp and it will work again... but once you exit and restart mw2 mp it will reupdate on its own... i hope this doesnt result in a vac ban... dont see how it would but who knows

As of 12-27-2013 this no longer works. I had used this fix, then suddenly it started updating on its own yesterday. Now, I have followed these steps, but the the Steam Beta Update does not stay it always goes back to Opt Out. I have successfully played a couple of times by following all steps, and prior to starting mw2 switch to beta, and quickly launch, but it does not work all the time. Any thoughts or suggestions. I would be fine with removing all DLC, as I will never use, and lesson learned for the future to not buy any.

Does it work ? I did everything but if i try to start the game it wouldn´t start because of a missing gamedata.
