Adding 3D Lighting effects to 2D Images Using Curvy 3D

Simple way of taking advantage of Curvy's lighting features to add 3D shading effect to 2D images

Step 1
First I load my 2D image into Curvy as a backdrop. Here I am using an illustration from Johnny Hart for the old PC game “B.C. Quest for Tires II” which I have taken the liberty to cut out and add my own background in GIMP.

Step 2
Next I draw a Cube primitive so that it fills the view port or, at least the portion of the image which I want to add effects too.
So that I can see the backdrop over top of the primitive I use viewport options to overlay the backdrop so that it is in front of the primate and I begin editing using the ‘inflate’ tool.

Finally, making sure to deselect the primitive, so as to remove the orange selection cursor, I save a screenshot as a bitmap.
Wrapping Up
Taking the bmp into GIMP I make it as a layer (adding Alpha) over top of the original and proceed using the eraser and overlay brush to remove the grey areas around my mountain and allowing bits of the original image to show through where aesthetically appropriate.

As long as Simon is still implementing backdrops, the inflate tool and cubes it should be available ;)
