1. Why Chicken Out?
You probably saw commanders leading the charge or stayed really close to the heat of the battle so they can get real time updates on the situation right?
The problem here is, you're likely to die there, often. And while you're respawning, your team is effectively leaderless, which means you can't update fire support markers, enemy tank locations, infantry pushes, etc. That's awful.
Instead, where you should be for the most of the battle, is one of the three gunner seats of your big ass guns. Hug it like you GF(not). Here, you can take your time to assess the situation on the map and update markers on the fly without having to worry about tracer rounds flying over your head. Leave the weightlifting(mark making) process to your TLs. Listen to their needs, and command them with respect and an eagle eye view.
Plus, you can directly issue order to your guns here, or operate them yourself. It's important. A team with fire support at the click of a marker is unstoppable.
2.Press M to get gud
M is your best friend as commander, bar none. It can provide your with an almost precise picture of what're your men doing and where're the markers (so you don't blow up friendlies by accident because of a dumbly placed marker) so you can command and deploy arty accordingly. Speak to your TLs while looking at it, pull it out to double check before unleashing your volley, and update markers as soon as your TLs report them. In short, you gotta stare at it and operate with it for around one third of your match.
X is a good friend, but don't spam it too much or you may get kicked(lmao). You get all the important information from it, like Charlie's got a load of Jerries that need some HE, Echo just spotted an panzer, etc. You can use it to announce enemy armor marks, incoming artillery barrages and fire supports, supply drop requests and announcements, plus 'I NEED AMMO NODES RN' vibes goes here.
Oh, also, don't forget to grab a cup of water, you're gonna need it.
3.Call them rounds in!
Now for the fun part: killing stuff.
You probably wondered why I said artillery is good for erasing armor as well. Yeah, I'm aware that you can't put a 105 HE through the top of a tank and nuke it, it'll be too op (although realistic). But there's one thing that makes an armor truly threatening: its infantry escorts. A tiger with grenadiers can wreck havoc, but without em a tiger is no more than a kitten.
Here's what you do about them:
1.Confirm their location. Ask clearly if the armor is marked directly or some distance away. Mark as close as possible and state it clearly.
2.Rain some HE that way. It can't kill the armor, but can surely suppress it as if there's a bazooka brigade firing at it nonstop, and it can wipe out whoever that's close to the tank, scaring others away.
3.Top it up with Smoke. This will cover friendly AT and Engineers on their approach plus blinding it totally.
4.Profit.
If it moves, chase it with smoke, as soon as it stops rain smoke at it so it has to keep moving, which will drastically lower its capabilities of dealing damage, and improving the odds your AT boys have to snipe its ass.
Dealing with infantry is a lot simpler.
When you're attacking: send the whole area flying with HE first, then smoke em after you got em as you can't remove OPs. Move forward and leave nothing alive, and you can sit there counting your kills as your profit, simple.
Defending is even easier: Remind your team they have fire support at their disposal. Once you get markers, update them to team-wide ones to minimize FF before unleashing hell and tell your loader to slap them HE rounds into the chamber, it's time to make some EXPLOSIONS
4.Done
Now you know how to utilize artillery.
Go read some 101 guides on how to aim them well so you don't kill friendlies and get kick.
Then you can be the one who makes and breaks games
the one who everyone on you team loves
and make every unlucky soul on the wrong side of the party groan like hell

or you know you can also have someone else do the artillery and be just as effective while you as the commander are on the frontline, utilizing your 4x capping power that the role gives you ... ensuring that points get captured more easily, while still being able to fully make use of your commanders map-abilities
just dont run into the enemy like a lemming and die 24/7
