Controls
Place your hands on the home row; left hand on ASDF and right on JKL;.
  • Movement: J ←, K ↓, I ↑, L →
  • Save game: F when standing on a healing point. You should see *セーブしました* print in chat which means *saved*.
  • Map: ; (semicolon). Move around the map with the usual movement keys. More areas will uncover as you explore. You can teleport to uncovered areas that have a healing point. They will display with a red border. To teleport to a selected area, press F and then F again to confirm. Space or scroll wheel in the map will toggle between the surface (表) and underground (裏).
  • Teleport to town: ESC key and F to confirm. In town you can buy new keys in the shop and practise on the computer.
  • Spell book: Space. Space to dismiss, Enter to cast a spell you’ve entered (you will have to first buy the Enter key from the shop before it does anything).
  • Tutorial: Q
  • Toggle key colours: Tab
  • Toggle rubi characters[en.wikipedia.org]: Ctrl. The little letters above kanji characters. It’s a good idea to turn this off if you use OCR.
  • Change window size: F4
  • Change FPS: Alt+F5, toggles between high (高スペッワ用/なめらか) [60], medium (中スペッワ用/ノーマル) [30], and low (低スペッワ用/ガクガク) [15]
  • Toggle displaying FPS information in title bar: F8
  • Quit: Alt+F4 or close the window with the × button.

F is the “action button”, sort of like E in other games. You use it to buy things in the shop, confirm things, and use abilities with the characters that have them.

Space lets you dismiss things, like any window you want to exit out of (apart from the map where you have to press semicolon or right mouse button).
Battle
When you encounter an enemy you have three options: たたかう (fight), 呪文 (cast a spell), にげる (flee). Change between them with the movement buttons and press F to select.

If you buy the Backspace (BS) key, you can use it while fighting to correct your mistakes.
Spellcasting
If you do not know how spellcasting works in this game you will quickly find yourself stuck and unable to progress to a new area.

You can only cast spells you have. For example you can see in the trailer the spell KAERU being cast to turn into a frog, but if you try to cast it before acquiring this spell it will do nothing. In the spell book you can see all the spells you can cast. They are written in hiragana or katakana and must be cast in romaji. Fear not, I will include a reference table below.

You start the game with the knowledge of the spell あか, AKA. It means red in Japanese. Casting it will heal your character. You will notice in the spell book it is followed by (1/1), and after you cast it, (0/1). This is because it is a limited-use spell that you can only cast once until you walk onto a healing point which will replenish your uses.

Talk to characters you meet, even if you can’t understand them. Some of them will teach you new spells.

Note hiragana "ri" り in the game (and in many fonts) is written disconnected (kind of like リ but more rounded).

There’s also the small ya/yu/yo (ゃ/ゅ/ょ) which can appear after the i vowel character of each consonant, which stop the i sound of the consonant. e.g. きょ is KYO, not KIYO.

Slight spoilers for demonstration purposes:
Early on you encounter an herb/onion thing and upon chatting with them part of the screen will go white and if you check your spell book you can see you have the new spell くさ. Try looking this up in the table above. KUSA. Casting it will transform you to this character which has an ability to make things grow which you can use with F.

In order to cast spells you need to own the Enter key, so buy it from the shop.

To dismiss the spell book without casting, press Space.

You can transform back to your own character by casting D or walking over a healing point.

List of spells by spellbook positioning:
あか : AKA : heal 30 HP
あお : AO : heal 50 HP
みどり : MIDORI : heal 100 HP

Postface
I don’t speak Japanese so I might be wrong about some things, and I have not yet completed the game at the time of writing so I will update it as I come across new things in the game that could be confusing for English speakers.
